Talk:Jon Vander

Back to page

I'm curious as to the source which lists his nickname as "Dutch", as the subtitles for the DVD list it as "Hutch". Also, I believe "Hutch" was also used in the novelization.

Sources Edit

Where does the information about him being from Wayland and an ex-TIE Bomber pilot come from?--CT-5619 helmet comlink 22:59, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Dutch/Hutch Edit

Are you sure it's quite correct to write that Gold 5 referred to Vander as 'Hutch'? The only time he's ever called that is in the line "Lost Tiree, lost Dutch" which is mistakenly subtitled as 'Hutch' on the DVD. Even though that's what the subtitles say, that is surely not what Gold 5 says, it just means that whoever wrote the subtitles didn't know Gold Leader's nickname was Dutch and put Hutch because that's what it sounded like. Uh,it IS Hutch. That's what he actually said.Listen to Gold Five's words, and you'll hear him say "Hutch."Where did you get "Dutch" from?I've watched "A New Hope" over 50 times and Gold Five definitely refers to Gold Leader as "Hutch."And quite frankly, Gold Leader's current backstory should be scrapped and replaced with something that lacks glaring continuity errors. His name, or at least his callsign, is definitely Hutch. If another source labeled him as "Dutch," that source is wrong, because the movie is the ultimate canon source. If you want it to be Dutch, go ask George Lucas to do another new edition of "A New Hope." ZeldaTheSwordsman ````

If the DVD subtitles spell "Hutch", shouldn't it be the correct version, since the trading cards are known to make mistakes? Remember Dack Ralter vs Dak Ralter controversary. Mauser 17:47, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Don't forget, "Dutch" originally comes from the ambiguously canon Star Wars Musical. 76.171.52.46 03:06, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

I have never heard anyone mistake the name as Dutch until I saw this webpage. And the fact that people are citing an action figure and a CCG card over the annotated screenplay smacks of fanboy bias. Before further weight is thrown behind the canonicity of CCG argument, I would direct them to this card: [[1]] PeepsMcJuggs 12:17, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Dutch Edit

If his name would be "Dutch", than there are some funny facts: First, Jon is a Dutch name, although not very common. Second: "Vander" is a very common part in Dutch last names and means "From" in classic Dutch, like:

Vander Berg

Van Der Berg

Van Den Berg

"Berg" is just an axeple, and means "Mountain", other names are also very common. 81.206.59.210 09:45, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, if Vander was always his canonical name, it would seem to suggest Dutch is his moniker - even though that would make little sense in a galaxy "far away" from the Netherlands. If Vander was given to him after the fact, then it may be the other way around...someone giving him a Dutch-like name based on what they thought was his nickname, even though Hutch would make more sense and seems to be what you hear in the movie. 69.178.138.226 23:36, February 25, 2010 (UTC)
