Talk:Laser
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
"Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." - Is that true? I know it is in real life, but I've never heard this in-universe. -LtNOWIS 22:37, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Neither have I. Star Wars laser weapons don't behave like real-life lasers anyway, so it seems unlikely that the acronym (which describes how real-life lasers are produced) would be applicable in-universe. Red XIV 13:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- The L.A.S.E.R. acronym is appropriate, given the description of how blasters work on the blaster page. The description basically matches the actual lasing process (bouncing light energy back and forth in a gas or other "gain medium", and raising the energy level by the interaction between the Gain Medium and the light, with the light stimulating the emission of radiation from the G.M....aparently Tibana Gas does this better than the Gain Mediums with which we are more familiar), so even Blasters have a "True laser" component, so both Blasters and "Lasers" in Star wars appear to be laser/particle beam hybrids of some sort, and the distinction betweeen "Laser", "Blaster", and "Disrupter" is merely one of the ratio of laser energy to particle stream, with "lasers" having more laser energy (and thus probably moving faster), Blasters having more particle beam, and Disrupters having the most particle beam characteristics and the least laser energy per shot. Perhaps the information on Lasers, Blasters, and Disruptors could be consolidated into one page, with laser first, blasters second, disruptors third?

[edit] Remove (i.e. using gases as part of the beam's composition)
Can we remove this? It's not even an example.
