"House Nuruodo" or "Nuruodo Family"?Edit

I'd have been inclined to leave this page at House Nuruodo, as we don't at present have any explicit references to them as the "Nuruodo Family"; this is, of course, the exact opposite of the case with the Chaf Family, who're never called "House Chaf" in canon that I'm aware of, and we have no clear, direct evidence for the name of the Eighth Ruling Family at all - I won't even rule out the possibility that they are House Nuruodo after all!!

I know that's inconsistent, but it is more accurate to canon, and thus to what IMHO is the most appropriate way to present the information in the text of the pages. Anyone else got any thoughts on this? An alternative would be to cut back the main pages to Family names, Nuruodo, Chaf, etc., and make everything else a redirect.... --McEwok 21:11, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

  • When I first wrote the stubby little thing, I placed it at Nuruodo, but somebody else then moved it to House Nuruodo. Also, you yourself have consitently pointed out that the more common canon term for all of them as a whole Ruling Families. -- SFH 21:23, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Canonical confirmation for use of "Nuruodo family": Force Heretic I: Remnant, page 89. I'm aware that the NJO made few mistakes in regards to the Chiss—the least they have to answer for in my opinion—but it is a canonical source. -- SFH 05:43, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Thrawn's full name does not help Edit

Thrawn's full name is "Mitth'raw'nuruodo". That does not help determine which family he is part of. From what I saw, the first part of the full name is the family. However, in this case, the last part happens to be a family name. 4.159.107.114 02:35, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Likely the situation resulted from the NJO writers wanting to come up with a House for Thrawn's origins but they're idea of such differing from what Zahn had in mind. However, Outbound Flight trumps the NJO series in canonicity regarding Thrawn's family as it mentions it directly, rather than by inferrence. Hence, Thrawn was not a member of the family, as the above user stated. Removing. --Niirfa-sa 07:01, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
    • This actually originates with an article in Star Wars Gamer 5, which goes into detail about some of the Chiss families, and the Nuruodo entry is clearly tailored around Thrawn. Given that that article also indicates the families are more political than genuinely familial, and that bloodlines are so comingled that it's quite easy for Chiss to claim allegiance to any one of the families, it's entirely possible Thrawn belonged to more than one. jSarek 07:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
    • A noteworthy point, true, but Thrawn clearly says that he was a commoner in Outbound Flight prior to his adoption by the Mitth family and this is only shortly before his exile. I somehow doubt the Nuruodo would have adopted him after the Outbound Flight incident in any case. --Niirfa-sa 18:40, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
      • Every Chiss is born into SOME family (often several); that would probably be where he got the Nuruodo lineage. jSarek 19:59, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
        • Is that so? I was under the impression the Ruling Families were just the families in power at the time, hence why the number varies. Also, there's the matter that his brother doesn't have "Nuruodo" in his name. --Niirfa-sa 20:32, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
          • From the Gamer article (and note it leans heavily on the four-family model that was disrupted by Survivor's Quest and retconned by The Joiner King into more): "The four ruling families - the Csapla, Nuruodo, Inrokini, and Sabosen - represent bloodlines said to predate modern Chiss civilization. Every Chiss claims affiliation to one of the four families, as determined by by tradition and birthplace. In truth, the family names are little more than cultural holdovers. Chiss bloodlines have become so co-meddled, that a Chiss could easily claim affiliation to any of the four. Since the four families are not in competition, and rivalries are rare, a Chiss' allegience to one family does not typically affect his day to day living." jSarek 20:43, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
            • Hmm... Interesting and it would suggest that Thrawn could claim descent from the Nuruodo if it weren't were a few key items. First off being that the remainder of his family (i.e., his brother) does not. It's possible that, in a context similar to the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, he adopted a noble name later in life (as Marcus did Aurelius) but then doesn't explain why he acknowledges his common status outright. All in all it's clear that, if anything else, communication between Zahn and other writers on the Chiss was not very clear. I'll leave it for now as, in spite of the convolution and seeming unlikeliness there is a lack of solid proof on either side of the argument. That said, I still think Thrawn's name should be removed as there remains no proof he was part of the family. But I won't rule out his membership either. --Niirfa-sa 01:30, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
