Where do we have it that the torpedoes used against the DSI were "high speed" as apposed to regular P-torpedoes?--Eion 22:31, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Browsing around, I saw the Databank mentions the fact. --Fade 22:37, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

  • hmm, wonder where they got it. Oh well, conceded for now.--Eion 23:07, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Smaller weapon yields[]

The article states that proton torpedoes varied in size all the way down to the kiloton range, the type which Luke used against the Death Star. On the MiniMag PTL page, the databank says that the man-portable missile launchers were specifically designed to fire proton torpedoes--torpedoes that must have been smaller, lighter, and less destructive than those mounted on a starfighter. Is this correct? RMF 04:08, 29 January 2006 (UTC) IRL the US Army built a bazooka type launcher that fired a nuclear warhead with a yield of 19 tons. So yes, it is likley that the shoulder launched torps of a galaxy spanning civilization are at least as destructive as those built by a pre spaceage civilization. --Lowkey

About their destructive power...[]

I got a question, the article says Proton Torpedoes can be nuclear. Wouldn't they basically cripple capital ships with one hit? I'm trying to research for a modification and I need a idea of how powerful these weapons are.Unsigned comment by Bannaman (talk • contribs).

  • Capital ship shields are often really strong, and can provide a lot of protection. But some proton torpedoes can do a ton of damage: I think the Arrestor was taken out by like 6 proton torpedos. Of course, yields vary, and capital ship proton torpedoes are often a lot bigger than ones on fighters. -LtNOWIS 04:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Even so,a nuclear explosion would overwhelm the shields. They just decided not to let nuclear weapons exist in the star wars as the fact that a capital ship can take multiple hits makes more dramatic battles as a single fighter wiping out the imperial fleet with one shot is just boring
Let's think about something for a second. According to AOTC-ICS light turbolasers can fire 400 Gigatons per shot. That given, I highly doubt a nuclear weapon could 'wipe out the imperial fleet with one shot'. There is a limit as to how much power one could derive from either nuclear fission or fusion, even considering the highly advanced civilization that the SW universe is. 167.206.204.68 13:38, 13 December 2007 (UTC) G.A.Thrawn

Editing[]

I have just finished a MAJOR revision of this article. Well, maybe not major. I didn't add much technical data. I just "improved" the formatting: 1) I wrote a little introductory material as the article's "stub"; and 2) Placed the original article's overly long begining paragraph in a new subheading called Description. I also changed the place of a couple of paragraphs.

One thing that bugs me (pun intended) though is the HUGE space beneath the "stub" and the Contents box. I couldn't quite fit the picture there. If anyone of you could fit a picture there (or an infobox), please do! -Gel Maethor 10:53, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Invention of Proton Torpedo[]

Hmm, I added a little paragraph in Behind the Scenes about some contradictory information regarding the invention of the torpedo. Going back and re-reading it though, I suppose the book could have been referring to a specific model of the warheads. Anyone want to check me on that? Lalala la 02:25, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Speaking of specific models, the weapons in KOTOR II are called "proton missiles" rather than "proton torpedoes" and may be a (possibly MUCH) less advanced predecessors of "modern" proton torpedoes. Also, the unexploded missile stuck in the hull of the Ebon Hawk... it is not technically wrong to say that the missile did not explode on contact, but it is more accurate to say that the missile was a dud; a similar event occurs in the opening battle of I, Jedi, in which a Tri-Fighter manages to shoot an incoming proton torpedo with its ion cannon, effectively reducing it to a nonexplosive unguided projectile (which, unfortunately for the tri-fighter pilot, still had enough kinetic energy to pierce the cockpit viewport).

As for the proton torpedoes on the N-1 starfighters, they may have been early-model torpedoes; keeping in mind that the N-1s were fairly advanced for their time and equipped with what was at the time cutting-edge technology, it is possible that proton torpedoes were developed not long before the events of Episode I and had not been widely adopted prior to the Clone Wars. Given that (assuming this line of argument is true) they were invented at a time of relative peace, and they aren't THAT spectacular an improvement over existing weapons, there would have been no particular hurry to retrofit older ships with proton torpedo launching systems, or to replace older (but not yet obsolete) ships with the very latest vessels, until the outbreak of the Clone wars. This could result in a common (in-universe) misconception that proton torpedoes were actually invented during the Clone Wars, especially given that whether the first battle of the Clone Wars was at Geonosis or at Naboo is open to interpretation. 66.171.242.145 03:06, 26 March 2008 (UTC) 23:06, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

What's in a warhead?[]

Since becoming a SW fan, I've seen proton torpedoes described as being nuclear weapons, antimatter-matter anhiallation weapons, even a sort of dirty bomb that sprayed off tons of protons on detonation. Since none of the descriptions had any canon references, I don't know if which (if any) were correct. That said, could we PLEASE get a canon listing on the reaction a proton torpedo uses? 167.206.204.68 13:51, 13 December 2007 (UTC)G.A.Thrawn

Stuff blows up. A New Hope. Darth Oompa Loompa 21:15, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Derived from the name, I'd guess that proton torpedoes use the nuclear fusion of hydrogen nuclei (protons) to helium nuclei as energy source, 4 p -> He That's the same process as the sun or hydrogen bombs use to generate energy. Another possibility is that the warhead is equipped with equal amounts of protons and antiprotons, so that we'd get a matter-antimatter annihilation. In that case they'd rather be called antiproton torpedoes, however, although their name might have been shortened due to military slang. 93.209.251.61 22:11, February 6, 2013 (UTC)

Can proton torpedoes bypass shields?[]

Can some types of proton torpedo bypass shields?

They do this in the computer game Empire at War and its expansion Forces of Corruption, as do all solid projectiles, including grenades, rockets, concussion missiles, diamond-boron missiles, carbonite missiles, mass driver rounds and hypervelocity gun rounds. In all other sources, proton torpedoes are unaffected by energy, or "ray", shields but blocked by particle shields, and most shield systems incorporate both types of shields, though a sizeable volley of proton torpedoes, as demonstrated by Rogue Squadron on many occasions, is often more than an enemy ship's shields can withstand. The nonexistence of particle shields in Empire At War and Forces of Corruption is purely a game mechanic. 66.171.242.145 03:58, 26 March 2008 (UTC) 23:58, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

There is no explosion in Empire at War. The torpedo just seems to come near the target and fade away. Darth Oompy 11:14, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Diamond-boron Missiles do not go through shield in Star Wars Empire at War. The proton torpedoes in Empire at War actually disappear right as they hit the target and a small damage effect appears.Nebulon B freak 20:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Differences in Torpedo Weapons between AOTC and ANH[]

The ordinance loadout on SLAVE I indicated that it had proton torpedoes. But the one that was fired at Kenobi at Geonosis does not look like the one that the X-Wing uses. Has there been any differentiation between the two models? Nighthawke 22:15, March 14, 2010 (UTC)

Well, for one, Jango Fett didn't fire a proton torpedo during that fight. He used seismic charges, and later fired a homing missile. --72.211.140.31 21:29, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

superfluous title in article[]

Is there a reason Proton_torpedo/Legends#Behind_the_scenes_2 is separate from Proton_torpedo/Legends#Behind_the_scenes? (i tried to combine them, but i couldn't make it work. Not sure why it wouldn't.) 71.121.143.27 05:23, May 15, 2017 (UTC)

Okay, think it worked this time... 71.121.143.27 05:30, May 15, 2017 (UTC)

proton torpedoes named after Star Trek photon torpedoes?[]

Just deleted an uncited claim that the Star Wars weapons are named after the similar-sounding Star Trek weapons. If the statement is true, the spelling and grammar needs correction, perhaps to say, "Proton torpedoes are named as an homage to Star Trek's photon torpedoes, and erroneously use that name in the Star Wars Radio Drama." --71.121.143.27 03:41, March 20, 2018 (UTC)
