  • Should this be moved to simply R2? MarcK 21:06, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)
    • I believe this isn't at R2 because Artoo refers specifically to R2-D2. --Imp 21:36, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)
      • And yet (last time I checked) 'R2' redirects here, not to our beloved R2-D2. This does make sense, though, in the event that one is speaking of 'an R2 unit'. I do think it would make more sense for this to be at either R2 series, R2 astromech series, or R2 astromech droid series. I don't see any reason for the parentheses in the name. MarcK: Think of this in the same way that you would think of E-11 as opposed to E-11 blaster rifle. We've decided to put the appropriate descriptive nouns in article titles. Same thing with T-65 X-wing starfighter. – Aidje talk 22:58, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)
      • With 37 nonexistent links to "R2", does anyone know why it was decided NOT to have "R2" redirect here? Someone has attempted twice to redirect "R2" to here and both times it was deleted. Setting up the redirect seems the easier solution than going through each and every article and modifying the "R2" links to point directly here instead. That's a lot of tedious, manual work.Telinome 03:44, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Alienating NR leaders?[]

"IA resisted the urge to feature Artoo-Detoo's heroics in its HoloNet advertisements released after the fall of the Galactic Empire for fear of alienating New Republic leaders."

Where is that sourced? I want to know more about that.

R2-D2 gender[]

Hi everyone, I have to write a paper about gender and robots and I was wondering why it seems that everyone believes that R2 is male gendered?

It seems pretty logical that T-800s are male, but this little droid has nothing typical in its appearence that shows it's a male and not a female?

In the wiki article, the droid is always refered to with a "he" pronoun. McGreggor also refers to the droid as a male in some interview I have found.

However, I have found two quotes on this site referring to it both as masculine and neutral:

"No job is over this little guy's head." ―R2-series advertising slogan

"An extremely well-put-together little droid, Your Highness. Without a doubt, it saved the ship, as well as our lives." ―Captain Panaka to Queen Amidala

what do you think about it?

thanks in advance for your help.

Jonathan

  • Hey there. Panaka wasn't really familiar with Artoo and probably didn't care much for droids. However, if you watch any of the films of the original trilogy, you'll notice Threepio and other characters constantly referring to Artoo as "he," with quotes like "He's always getting us into trouble" or "He tricked me into going this way!" Various works of the Expanded Universe, including The New Essential Guide to Characters, outright state that Artoo has masculine programming. In Star Wars, it's not about the appearance of the droid, but rather whatever gender is programmed into them. Hope this helps. Menkooroo 14:14, December 15, 2010 (UTC)
