If you hit the "Random article" button a bit, you will find that there are hundreds of characters and other items with no appearances. We choose to treat only sources with a distinct storyline as appearances, everything else - non-fiction books, RPG supplements, card games, miniatures, toys - is treated is sources, though sometimes the distinction may not be obvious.
