[edit] Images

Out of these, the one for General, Lt. General, Commander, and Major are definate.

  • Dodonna is a General and wears five red.
  • Vanden Willard is a General that is subordinate to Dodonna and wears four red and one blue.
  • Luke Skywalker is a Commander in ESB and wears three blue.
  • Bren Derlin is a Major in ESB and wears three red.

Further the five blue insignia is seen on two different characters, General Bob Hudsol and Captain Raymus Antilles. Now the explanation here I think is that the rank is a junior flag/general insignia. Why?

  • Hudsol is a General, if five blue is for a Captain that means it makes him a Colonel in the Army. Which he would be referred to as if he held that rank.
  • Antilles is the Captain of the Tantive IV, but that is a position as well as a rank. Vader calls him "Captain", this is more likely a reference to his position than his rank. He could easily hold the rank of Commodore and still be a captain of his ship.

The ranks that I extrapolated are as follows:

  • Major General/Rear Admiral, it comes from the pattern that the badges add more red to the insignia and get more senior within the flag/general officer insignias. It could easily be 3 red with 2 blue, but I choose 3 blue with 2 red because to get the Lt. General rank you just add another 2 red, so each rank step is distinguished by 2 red pips.
  • Captain/Colonel, again it is the next step up from Commander based on the pattern. That's not to say it is right.
  • Lieutenant, Sub-Lieutenant, Ensign; these are all again extrapolations. Likely the most incorrect out of any of these, but they would be close. We just haven't seen anyone with these ranks wearing insignia (or the uniform on which the insignia would be placed as they aren't worn on flight suits).

[edit] Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, SWTC

According to the West End Games Rebel Alliance Sourcebook:

  • Five red pips, arranged in an X-shape, denoted a General. The SWTC page on Rebel insignia has images showing Jan Dodonna wearing this in ANH and Carlist Rieekan wearing this in ESB. It also shows Bob Hudsol and Raymus Antilles wearing five blue pips in ANH
  • Generals also are said to use a collar insignia consisting of two striped, upside-down, squared off U's, much like what Crix Madine wears on his collar in ROTJ.
  • Four red pips meant a Colonel., though the image we have (presumably modeled on SWTC's image) looks different from the one in the book: while ours looks like the General's five-pip insignia with the lower left pip gone, WEG's removes the upper right one instead.
  • Majors wear three red pips in a "V" shape. Bren Derlin wears this in ESB, as SWTC points out.
  • Lieutenants (here referring to the "Army designation") wear one red pip.
  • Commanders (a "Navy designation") wear three blue pips in a "^" shape. Luke Skywalker wears this in ESB, according to SWTC.
  • Captains (naval captains, that is) wear two blue pips, one above the other.

All "red" pips are actually black in the actual book, but presumably they would have been red if it were in full colour. The insignia are also on enongated rounded rectangles instead of squares, but that's probably just done for the purposes of the presentation. The book also claims that blue pips meant fleet ranks, while red pips represented army ranks. Of course, that SWTC page points out Vanden Willard is seen on screen in ANH with red and blue pips (a WEG "General" insignia with a blue dot in the middle), so that, at least, should be treated as a mistake and ignored beyond a brief BTS mention. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:15, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Notes on possible expansion

  1. The SWTC page identifies comlink badges used by Echo Base troops and Rebel pilots that look like Imperial rank squares from the Star Wars Technical Journal: are these specifically indicated to be rank badges?
  2. Likewise, the shoulder patches worn by Hoth personnel: are these identified anywhere as — well, anything? I wouldn't be surprised either way.
  3. Someone with image-making skills should make or modify images for the SWTC, WEG, and X-Wing video game schemes for the BTS section: however, I think we shouldn't include original research anywhere, just report on a selection of schemes. —Silly Dan (talk) 01:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] X-Wing ranks

  • I've added a section on the ranking system in the X-wing game, but if it isn't appropriate, feel free to edit it. - NighthawkLeader 03:51, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
