Talk:S-foils
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
Is there a real reason for the existence of the foils? apart from making the cool phrase 'lock your s-foils in attack position'. I mean, if lasers were more effective when the foils were open, why make them closed at all? Moff Rebus 21:08, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- It's explained in Star Wars Insider 83. When they're closed, hyperspace and atmospheric flight is improved.-LtNOWIS 21:32, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Plus, on some fighters (such as the X-wing), the landing gears can't be properly extended with the S-foils in attack position. Red XIV 04:22, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
Is there any difference in space combat, or why are the foils opened only shortly prior to combat like in Ep. 4? Non-arcade games (X-Wing series) only make it disable weapons and looking at the positive aspects I don't see why the foils aren't open at all times in space, combat or otherwise. Also S-foils are never or almost never closed as a combat maneuver in "serious" canon (ruling out console games). Celery 23:41, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 'S' stands for... ?
Is there any source for saying that 'S' stands for 'Strike'? I thought I heard somewhere that it stood for 'Stabilizer'. Unfortunately, I couldn't name my source if asked—it may have even been Episode III, come to think of it. Did one of the clone pilots say "stabilizer foils"? – Aidje talk 16:07, 19 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Perhaps you're thinking of this part of the script;
- The JEDI STARFIGHTERS extend the stability foils on the ends of their wings.
- It comes just after Obi-Wan talks to Oddball. --Fade 17:00, 25 Nov 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Delta-7 Aethersprite?
- I don't recall ever seeing them deploy S-foils. Red XIV 07:48, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, in the toy versions sold by Hasbro, the Aethersprite could deploy S-Foils as part of an 'attack mode'. However, I think you're right, it's probably non-canon, so I'll amend it. --Thetoastman 21:58, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hasbro does that kind of thing a lot anyway, such as with the Slave I toy released at the same time.--Darth Oblivion
[edit] Note about Title Plurality
- This article is S-foils and not S-foil for a reason, namely, that S-foils went together as a unit and always occured in sets of at least 2, making their singular use almost nonexistant. Therefore, the plural S-foils in the title refers not to the collective S-foils of the galaxy but rather to a single set, making the term actually singular. --Thetoastman 22:07, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] X-wing infamous
- Not sure about referring to the X wing as infamous here '.. newer starfighters like Incom's infamous X-wing'. Maybe from an imperial point of view it is. -Finlayson 02:55, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- I would argue that any ship commonly used by a dissident group against the prevailing government could be considered "infamous". --Thetoastman 21:24, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Surface area?
Isn't it true that lower surface area (in atmosphere) provides speed while higher surface area provides maneuverability? -Aiddat 21:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think thats true tought i have difficulty to explain why (i was never good for explaining), i will look on wikipedia for more info. Rookie_One 04:41, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
