Talk:Sleeper ship

Back to page

Errr... Science problem with the sleeper ships? How'd they reach Tion in anything short of several dozen millennia? If they're travelling at sublight speeds and Coruscant is in the core and Tion is in the Outer Rim... well that could mean they're as much as fifty or sixty thousand lightyears apart.

Perhaps the sleeper ships used a more primitive form of FTL? Or perhaps Tion wasn't actually colonized by sleeper ships? I know it's in the canonical sources but... it violates the very meaning of "sublight" travel, unless light speed is considerably faster in the Star Wars universe. The laws of physics simply tear this apart. --Niirfa-sa 19:27, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Or, perhaps, the galaxy is smaller than the Milky Way. Or perhaps it actually did take that long. The pre-Republic era covered by The New Essential Chronology is 75,000 years long, and there's no certain reason to think that the earliest ones couldn't have been launched even before that. jSarek 23:27, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
    • The latter idea could work, though the first idea doesn't. The galaxy, according to several sources, is about the size of Andromeda - 120,000 lightyears, which is actually bigger than our galaxy. However, in regards to the latter idea it seems, according to the timeline, that it might just work. It would require however, that the Coruscanti launch the sleeper ships prior to the planet's conquest by the Infinite Empire around 30,000 BBY. This could still work however, as Coruscant itself was covered completely in city by 100,000 BBY. So never mind, this doesn't contradict itself. Thanks for pointing that out. --Niirfa-sa 23:54, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Considering the extent of human colonization from the core to the outer rim and the existence of highly advanced pre-Republic human empires like the Azure Imperium, I believe that humans definitely had some sort of FTL technology early on. Since I do not think any definitive date has ever been given, it could also be the case that hyperspace cannons were in use well before the founding of the Republic. Also correct me if I am wrong, but from memory I do not believe the NEC explicitly says that the sleeper ships were sublight as assumed by the article. I imagine these sleeper ships were something like the UNSC ships from the Halo universe in that their FTL was slow enough that the crew needed to put in stasis. I just think for the humans of Coruscant to have defeated another race capable of space travel in 200,000 BBY and having made Coruscant into a city planet by 100,000 BBY that they were at a technological level to create some sort of FTL travel. Thanks.
