Dedicated generators? Edit
"Tractor beams require their own generators, making them somewhat inefficient."
I have yet to find any source that confirms that aside from the Death Star which is stated as being different from "normal" tractor beam projectors in this regard. Also this needs to be in past tense... which I'll do right now.--TheLIGHTSABERwieldingNERFHERDER 06:25, 1 Dec 2005 (UTC)
Can they prevent a ship from going into hyperspace?
- Yes, I believe they can. They are similar to gravity well generators in that respect I think. Chack Jadson 01:58, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's probably more a matter that trying to go to hyperspace while caught in a tractor beam would result in your ship ripping itself apart. Red XIV 04:55, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
In Atmosphere Edit
Any thoughts on whether an orbiting ship (or a ship at a sufficiently low altitude) could use a tractor beam to pull a terrestrial object from the surface of a planet? I haven't been able to find any info on this, but the fact it hasn't apparently occurred before in Star Wars might suggest there's a reason why it can't happen, whatever it may be.--Varitek 02:26, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- If you believe in the canon of The Crystal Star novel, then a tractor beam was used to scoop a plot of dirt with Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin Solo on it. Probably this was at short-range, though, and it should be remembered the technique is like standard alien abductions. Thus it is not too big an idea. A very plausible method of capture. I don't know how far you can grab something. Orbital Bombardments have some range, but I can't comment on the tractor beams.188.8.131.52 19:03, August 11, 2013 (UTC)
