Thylacosmilus doesn't seem like a very likely candidate for the basis of the tusk cat. It had regular saber teeth of the kind found in the saber-toothed cats, and only flat flanges in the lower jaw to act as scabbards. It doesn't seem like a very good match when you consider the fact that the extinct elephant Deinotherium actually had downward-curving tusks in the lower jaw exactly like those of a tusk cat. The crested skull, nasal ridge and hooflike toes are also consistent with an elephant basis. Is there any official reference to indicate the connection with Thylacosmilus instead of Deinotherium? The swamp stalker looks almost identical to this creature, should it be listed as a possible subspecies?
