At least through the first 5 books, the ranges at which starfighters fight are too close with the speeds too slow for real space combat. The ranges involved are no better than achieved by most real hand held weapons. The speeds, my estimates are based on the closure rates, are no faster than the car in your garage.
Quite commonly, we hear about them waiting until they are within 2 km of the target that is closing head on to launch torpedos. They would wait until they were within a few hundred meters to open fire with the lasers.
Even a 747 is going to cover that 2 km in seconds. Most orbital space craft would do so in milliseconds. In order to make the descriptions in the books work, you have to multiply the given distances by anywhere from 100 to 1000. You would rarely be able to target your weapons or detect the enemy with your eyes alone. You either need the Force or your sensors. Will (talk -- contribs) 01:17, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Real space combat? I hate to use the old cliche, but these books are works of fantasy. Something may not make sense or work in our world, but we just have to accept that it does in the fantasy world of Star Wars. Adamwankenobi 01:26, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
