Tanis Mothma was the governor of Hanna City, Chandrila during the years prior to the Clone Wars. Her husband was an arbiter-general of the Galactic Republic and their daughter Mon Mothma became Bormea Sector's Senator. Tanis was the grandmother of Jobin and Lieda Mothma.

In 22 BBY, Tanis Mothma made a public statement regarding a walk-out strike performed by Chandrila Public Safety Commission staff, in response to the vote for a Grand Army of the Republic. Tanis appeared to sympathize with the striking employees.
At some point during the reign of the Galactic Empire, Jovive Centi succeeded Tanis as governor of Hanna City.
