"I didn't know Mandalorians developed a type of lightsaber."
"We didn't. This was one of a kind. Legend tells that it was created over a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. After his passing, the Jedi kept the saber in their temple. That was until members of House Vizsla snuck in and liberated it. They used the saber to unify the people and strike down those who would oppose them. One time, they ruled all of Mandalore wielding this blade."
Kanan Jarrus and Fenn Rau, on the darksaber[src]

Tarre Vizsla, a Force-sensitive human male, was the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi Order[1] as a child.[4] According to legend, he created the darksaber, a unique black-bladed lightsaber which would become the symbol of leadership within House Vizsla,[1] and became the ruler of Mandalore.[5]

House Vizsla Death Watch

Vizsla was the ruler of Mandalore

After Vizsla's passing, the saber was kept in the Jedi Temple until it was taken by members of House Vizsla[1] during the fall of the Old Republic.[3][2] Sometime after his death, a large statue was erected on Mandalore to remember his legacy. When the Mandalorian Sabine Wren was young, her father, Alrich Wren, brought her to the statue to appreciate its history and legacy. During the Mandalorian civil war, the Galactic Empire constructed an outpost on the statue. Not willing to allow the Empire to disrespect what it stood for, Sabine and her younger brother, Tristan Wren destroyed the outpost, bringing the statue back to its former appearance.[5]
