[edit] Archive

We should have an archive of these, like they do at memory alpha. QuentinGeorge 04:38, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)

  • I concur. Sounds to me like you just volunteered. --SparqMan 03:28, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Length

  • I would suggest that we keep this at about 5 DYKs at a time, because at its current length of 8 it's making the page look a bit misaligned. MarcK 00:54, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)
    • That problem could be addressed if the two boxes on the other side were enlarged, if a third box was added, or if they were removed and the DYK box extended across the bottom segment. But 5 DYK is good too. --SparqMan 03:28, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)
  • Now that we've redesigned the main page...six seems OK to me. —Silly Dan (talk) 22:08, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
    • I think we could stand to have another one or two on the main page. There's still a bit of blank space at the end. -- Ozzel 18:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
      • I think it depends on monitor resolution. On my main screen (1440x900), it could use three more; but when I view it at a diff. res. (like 1024x768), it looks fine. RMF 19:07, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
        • Hmm...you must have a different text size setting than me, because I'm on 1024x768 and I still see plenty of space. -- Ozzel 04:07, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Content

I looked through the archive a bit, and I don't think we should have any more red-links in future DYKs. It's a bit like saying "did you know this, because we don't!" hehe --beeurd 21:03, 16 Oct 2005 (UTC)

  • I also suggest we avoid listing new articles which aren't sourced. Two of the articles currently on there were started by an anonymous user who started three articles currently on VFD (though one of them was sourced later). Another one is still missing its source, though I suspect it's from ROTS. This does not make us look that good, quite frankly. — Silly Dan 12:42, 31 Oct 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Canderous entry

I know this isn't a new article, but I added it as it highlights a very little known tidbit of information from KotOR. --Imp 21:04, 20 Dec 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Pictures?

I noticed someone put a picture on the template, and it was removed. Should we consider allowing small pictures on this template? —Silly Dan (talk) 02:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

I think it would be nice if one item in the template were accompanied by a picture, yes. — SavageBob 02:37, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I was the one who added the picture, as there was no rule I saw against it and it complemented the DYK directly by illustrating the article featured (23X). I think having a picture in the DYK section would definitely spice up the main page, since now it seems a little sparse, with only one picture on it. --Thetoastman 21:18, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] that

Can we just place "that" into the template label? And begin with ...? I haven't see any examples where that wouldn't work. SparqMan Talk 21:35, 3 January 2007 (UTC) he star wars universe

[edit] Wank

can someone please remove the latest entry a wank as it is unsuitable language and not cannon.ive never heard of one in the star wars universe

  • First, new entries go at the bottom so I moved it. Second, why did you ask here? Third, it is canon. Fourth, it is indeed canon. Fifth, yes the title is perverted, but sorry, it stays unless it's proven to be fanon. Chack Jadson 19:21, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mundane?

I really don't mind having articles such as window on the wiki at all, but could we perhaps limit the DYK to things that are a bit more unique to Star Wars? Or, at least, have less than half the template filled with such mundane topics? Graestan(Talk) 12:46, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

  • I hear what you are saying, Graestan, but I actually find the mundane ones occasionally interesting. Many of the topics that appear there never crossed my mind, and I never would have thought to look for them otherwise. I think its nice to have a real-world topic make a seemless Star Wars transition. It reminds us that their world isn't that much different than ours. These are just my opinions is all;PTommy (There are no Jedi here) 13:18, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
    • You're probably right—mundane things should be at least kept to a minimum. Most of them are certainly my doing. Though it was just a phase, I think. ;-) -- AdmirableAckbar (Talk) 13:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
      • Myself, I think that if an average reader would learn absolutely nothing new from the content of this template, it's not doing its job. "Did you know that riots occurred when beings were very angry?" or "Did you know that many species in the galaxy had teeth?" doesn't tell us anything of interest. —Silly Dan (talk) 21:09, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
        • Clearly we need more dumb Ewoks crap. -- Ozzel 22:05, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
          • Well, if someone says "Did you know Wicket once met a talking mountain/foiled an assassination attempt on Emperor Palpatine/celebrated Halloween", it's more likely to be something the average browser didn't know before or couldn't have guessed already. 8) —Silly Dan (talk) 01:56, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
            • This is exactly what I meant. zzzZzZZZ. Graestan(Talk) 04:10, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
              • For someone like me (the obvious minority), seeing the "Riot" blurb up there caught my eye, not because I didn't know that riots occured in the SW universe, but because I didn't know we had an article for it. Knowing that now, I intend to add a little to it. That is the benefit that I (and potentially others) "occasionally" get from "mundane" (and I do agree that they are at times just that) topics. I do think, however, that subjects such as "teeth" and "breasts" don't necessarily serve the purpose of DYK properly, if I'm even saying that properly.Tommy (There are no Jedi here) 04:27, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
                • I think many of these "mundane" topics can be made into more interesting entries on this template with a bit of work (see examples), but others might not have enough specific canonical facts to be worth mentioning. See some completely imaginary examples below. —Silly Dan (talk) 21:39, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Examples

Bad:

  • … that sandwiches were a type of food in the galaxy?
  • … that botanists studied botany?
  • … that many species had fingers?

Better:

  • … that Chalmun's Cantina was famous for its sandwiches?
  • … that the Galactic Empire hired Ho'Din botanists as part of its weapons programs?
  • … that Xexto had unusually long fingers?

Just my opinion. —Silly Dan (talk) 21:39, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

You mean, like today's "Did you know... the Hall of Knowledge in the Jedi Library had a wide array of knowledge?--68.111.251.45 16:19, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
