Temple Court

The Temple Court was the name for the area surrounding the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Located in the Temple Precinct, the Court was erected upon the roof of the city block that was used solely by the Jedi Order during the reign of the Galactic Republic and later the Galactic Alliance.

HistoryEdit

Circa 4,000 BBY, following the Jedi Order's efforts at repelling the Sith during the Great Sith War, the Galactic Republic donated the undeveloped land surrounding, and including, the Sacred Spire. While the founding structures were small and private, the Temple would grow in size over the next few centuries to completely cover the mountain. While the Temple proper was simply at the peak of the mountain, several hundred stories stretched out below in the giant block of durasteel and permacrete that gave shape to the Temple Precinct.[1]

In 3,653 BBY, the Court was bombarded by blasterfire from Sith starfighters when the resurgent Sith Empire emerged from hiding in Coruscant's atmosphere. Unprepared, the Jedi attempted to fight off the onslaught only to lose the Temple to their ancient enemies. In ruins, the Temple and Court would lie abandoned for several years.[4] Eventually the Galactic Senate raised enough funds, and by the Ruusan Reformations, the entire complex was completely restored.[2]

Standing for the next century, the Temple Court was bombarded once more by Republic troop transports following the execution of Operation: Knightfall by the Grand Army of the Republic in 19 BBY. As the Temple was raided and Jedi attempted to flee, the troops of the 501st Legion pounded the Court with blasterfire in hopes of exterminating the Order.[8] The Court would lay in ruin for the next several decades; access to the area was restricted to Imperial personnel only. It wasn't until the Yuuzhan Vong War that the area was ruin irreparable and lost to the alien invaders.[9]

The area around the Temple would remain in a state of disrepair for several years until the Galactic Alliance retook the planet and began rebuilding the capital of the civilized galaxy. As a symbol of thanks and unity between the Alliance and the reformed Jedi Order, Chief of State Cal Omas ordered the Reconstruction Authority to replace the ancient edifice with a new Temple.[10] Following detailed blueprints of the structure and surrounding areas, the Temple and Court were rebuilt exactly as they had existed before the rise of the Galactic Empire.[3]

In 40 ABY, Knight Jacen Solo rushed into the silent Court in order to manipulate the Force to slow the Millennium Falcon's acceleration as it prepared to crash-land on Coruscant. Crouching in an area surrounded by potted plants, Solo was successful in slowing the starship enough so that its passengers were not killed when it skidded to a stop.[3] Later that same year, during the funeral of Jedi Master Mara Jade Skywalker, a squad of Galactic Alliance Guardsmen chased Knight Leia Solo and her husband Han from the Temple and across the mezzanine leading to the Galactic Justice Center.[11]

In 43 ABY, the Order was faced with an internal threat that it was helpless to stop. Several Knights whom had been stationed at the Shelter space station during the Yuuzhan Vong War were overcome with an enigmatic madness which caused them to act in a wild and dangerous manner. Deamed threats to society, the Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala ordered the High Council to turn over all psychotic Jedi to be frozen in carbonite until a cure could be discovered. While Grand Master Kenth Hamner agreed to these terms, many Jedi did not. When Knight Jysella Horn exhibited signs of the illness, Master Cilghal attempted to detain her in the Jedi Archives but Knigh Horn made it out across the Temple Court, only to be detained by Coruscant Security Forces.[12]

Soon after, while crossing the Court to the southern speeder garage, Knights Yaqeel Saav'etu and Bazel Warv went mad and were forcibly dragged into the Temple's lower hangar by Jedi Jaina Solo and her parents. Several media personnel crowded the Court in an attempt to catch footage of the mad Jedi but largely were not able to obtain any images.[12]

When Sothais Saar was detained at the Senate Building, Chief Daala ordered a group of Mandalorians to strategically place themselves in the Court so as to create a diversion for a large attack squad to attack the Temple's Docking Complex. The Mandalorian sharpshooters fired shots into the main entrance of the Temple before Master Hamner repelled them from the Temple Precinct.[13]

LayoutEdit

Upon the roof of the block that gave support to the Temple Ziggurat the Jedi Order built the Court as a decorative area that could be visited by the public, as well as the Jedi. The Processional Way, a wide boulevard leading from the landing platform at the block's edge, bisected the western side of the Court and led up to the main entrance of the giant edifice.[4] Skylights in the roof of the block let natural light into the chambers below, while giant mezzanines traversed over top, granting passage across the Court. Towering bronzium statues were erected in the Court as well as memorial stones for past Jedi who had served the Order and the Republic honorably.[5] Along with statues, benches and potted plants dotted the landscape granting a peaceful atmosphere in the shadow of the Temple Ziggurat.[3] Additionally, entrances into the docking complex below the Court were tastefully hidden behind ferns and bushes.[12]

With the reconstruction of the Temple in 35 ABY, the Precinct saw the addition of several new mezzanines that traversed the canyons separating city blocks. On the western side of the Court the bridge to Fellowship Plaza connected the newly erected Galactic Justice Center with the new stone and transparisteel pyramid of the Jedi Temple.[11] To the south of the Temple, Unity Green was built as a symbol of unity between the Galactic Alliance and the Yuuzhan Vong.[14]
