The Star Wars: First Draft was the first revision to the rough draft, written by George Lucas in July of 1974. Most of the revision centered on names, and many of these changes were later rejected when George Lucas began work on the second draft, entitled Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars, in early 1975.[1]

Opening crawl[]

THE STAR WARS
Until the recent GREAT REBELLION,
the DAI NOGAS were the most
feared warriors in the universe.
For one hundred thousand years,
generations of DAI perfected their art
as the personal bodyguards of the King.
They were the chief architects of the
invincible ROYAL SPACE FORCE,
which expanded the King's power across
the galaxy, from the celestial equator
to the farthest stars.

Now these legendary warriors
are all but extinct. One by one,
they have been hunted down
and destroyed as enemies of
the NEW GALACTIC KINGDOM by a
ferocious and sinister rival
warrior sect, THE LEGIONS OF LETTOW.

Changes from the Rough to the First Draft[]

  • The names of about half the characters, organizations and locations changed throughout the script.
  • The sky of the Fourth Moon of Ogana changed from "bleak" to red. Lakes were present on that moon, some green.
  • The clouds of the Royal capital of Alderaan have become yellow oxide instead of white oxide.

Appearances[]

Because so many changes were made to the names in the script, the original names from the rough draft are indicated below.
