The Void was a name given to the phenomenon of complete absence of the Force on the planet Nathema as a result of a very potent Sith magic ritual performed by Lord Vitiate, with the coerced assistance of other Sith Lords, at the end of the Great Hyperspace War, c. 5,000 BBY. Vitiate invited all the remaining Lords to Nathema to perform a ritual to unlock the Dark Side, and obtain great power. While not all the Lords accepted his invitation, many did. When they arrived, Vitiate overpowered their wills and turned them into slaves, forcing them to participate in the ritual, which took days, if not weeks. The end result of the ritual was the complete annihilation of all lifeforms on Nathema, leaving it completely empty of life and the Force. Vitiate subsumed the essence of every living thing on the planet, including a large number of Sith Lords, into his own essence, and became immortal as a result.
