A thermal scan team was a special squad of Stormtroopers that the Galactic Empire commissioned to bolster security search teams. An example of the Empire using Thermal scan teams was the search of the Millennium Falcon on the first Death Star. Usually they were used in conjunction with Stormtrooper squads to search captured ships or suspected infiltrated areas.
