Thermite was a material usually used in conjunction with axidite to make the shell casing of thermal detonators. It was also found in the explosive cores of certain types of grenades.

Thermite is a real substance, and is used to make incendiary thermite grenades. It is a mixture of iron oxide and aluminium, and burns at 2204.44 °C.
