Thisspias was an Expansion Region planet located in the Farstey sector. It was home to the creatures known as cygnats and was the homeworld of the sentient reptilian Thisspiasians. The Thisspiasians were governed by a millennia-old absolute monarchy that was complemented by a democratically elected parliament. The Thisspiasians, an ancient species of warriors, joined the Galactic Republic early in its history, becoming instrumental in averting both external and internal threats to that government. Between 3959 BBY and 3956 BBY, the planet fell within the borders of Darth Revan's Sith Empire.

The Thisspiasian Force-sensitive Oppo Rancisis was born on Thisspias in 206 BBY and was given to the Jedi Order for training as an infant. After Rancisis inherited the title of Blood Monarch of Thisspias in 186 BBY, he abdicated the throne in favor of continuing his Jedi training and eventually became a Jedi Master. During the Clone Wars of 22 BBY19 BBY, Thisspias remained undecided on its loyalty to either the Republic or the Confederacy of Independent Systems, although Rancisis was instrumental in securing the aid of Thisspiasian warriors to Republic's side in several of the conflict's battles.

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Thisspias was bombarded and its inhabitants were enslaved. The Imperial governor of the planet imprisoned the Thisspiasian crown prince and subdued a native insurrection. Ultimately, the Rebel Alliance liberated the crown prince, after which Thisspias was placed under Imperial military quarantine. The crown prince returned to reclaim the throne of Thisspias following the Battle of Endor; however, the desire of the populace for a more democratic government led to an extremely bloody civil war. The Blood Monarch returned to power, and the planet was a member of the New Republic by 12 ABY. The Thisspias system was conquered by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong during their conquest of the galaxy.

Description[]

Thisspias was a rocky planet[4] located in the Thisspias system, a part of the Farstey sector[1] in the Trans-Hydian portion of[2] the Expansion Region.[1] The landmasses on the planet were green-colored with brown-and-white mountainous areas. Thisspias also featured pink and blue natural reservoirs of liquid,[3] and the planet's climate was temperate.[4]

Thisspias was home to several types of small creatures such as birds, bugs, and rodents.[3] In addition, the creatures known as cygnats lived on Thisspias.[5] At some point, a species of quadrupedal, snake-like reptiles also lived on the planet. The species eventually evolved into the sentient Thisspiasians. The flora of Thisspias included plants that bore vegetables.[3]

History[]

Early member of the Republic[]

During the early period of the Galactic Republic's existence, the Thisspiasians, an ancient species of meditative warriors native to Thisspias, eagerly joined the fledgling government,[3] with Thisspiasian warriors helping the Republic overcome many internal and external threats[4] and Jedi Master Nikil Nobil holding a seat on the High Council of the Jedi Order[7] around 3643 BBY.[8]

The area of space surrounding Thisspias was explored by the Republic at some point between 8000 BBY and 5500 BBY, and by 5000 BBY, the Thisspias system was located in the widely explored territory known as the civilized galaxy. As part of the Mandalorian Crusades in 3996 BBY, the Mandalorian Crusaders bested the forces of the Republic in a confrontation in the Thisspias system before advancing to the Mid Rim's Contruum system. Between 3959 BBY and 3956 BBY, Thisspias fell within the borders of Darth Revan's Sith Empire.[2]

Home of a Jedi Master[]

OppoRancisis egtf

Thisspias was the homeworld of Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis.

In 206 BBY,[9] the Force-sensitive Thisspiasian Oppo Rancisis was born to the reigning Blood Monarch of Thisspias.[10] The Blood Monarch turned her infant son over to the Jedi Order, hoping that Rancisis would return to Thisspias upon completing his Jedi training and use it to strengthen the monarchy.[11] By 186 BBY,[9] Rancisis' mother had died and the crown had passed to his younger sister.[12] That year, agitators stormed the Thisspias alcazar on the astronomical object Ratamesh and killed Rancisis' sister, who was present at the structure at that time. As a result, the throne of Thisspias was inherited by Rancisis, although he abdicated in favor of continuing his Jedi training, eventually becoming a Jedi Master.[11]

During the Clone Wars of 22 BBY19 BBY, Thisspias remained within space controlled by the Republic,[2] and the Republic's Eleventh Army was tasked with defending the planet's vicinity against the military forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the first campaigns of that conflict.[6] However, by 20 BBY, Thisspias remained undecided on its affiliation to either the Republic or the Confederacy.[13]

At one point in the conflict, Rancisis requested that the reigning Blood Monarch of Thisspias help the Republic fight against the Separatists. Per the Thisspiasian tradition, the Jedi Master had to defeat the ruler in unarmed combat in order for the former's request to be fulfilled. When Rancisis triumphed in the duel, the Blood Monarch agreed to lend Thisspiasian warriors to several battles of the Clone Wars.[3]

An oppressed world[]

Thisspias became a part of the Galactic Empire by 17 BBY.[6] Imperial warships bombarded the planet, and the Thisspiasians were conquered and enslaved. The Imperial governor appointed to rule over Thisspias assassinated the reigning Blood Monarch and imprisoned the Thisspiasian crown prince in the planet's Imperial troops' headquarters. The resultant insurrection by the outraged, rebellious Thisspiasians was quickly put down by the superior firepower of the Imperial forces.[3]

Shortly after that, spies of the Rebel Alliance infiltrated the Imperial facility housing the captive Thisspiasian crown prince and liberated the heir. The humiliated governor threatened to annihilate the Thisspiasian species but was eliminated by an Emperor's Hand,[3] one of a number of secret personal assassins of Galactic Emperor Palpatine,[14] who was sent to punish the governor for his failure. Although several of the natives of Thisspias left the planet and joined the Rebel Alliance, their homeworld was subsequently subjected to a[3] planet-wide[4] military quarantine[3] and remained under Imperial rule until shortly after Palpatine's death at the Battle of Endor[4] of 4 ABY.[15]

Post-Empire[]

The crown prince of Thisspias returned to his homeworld at that point. However, his claim to the throne was opposed by a vocal portion of Thisspiasians, who desired a transition to a more democratic government. The dispute led to a brief yet extremely bloody civil war that saw the Blood Monarch's return to power.[3] Subsequently, the new monarch took the first steps toward his homeworld joining the New Republic,[4] and by 12 ABY, Thisspias fell within the borders of that government.[6]

The Thisspias system was attacked by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong at some point between 26 ABY and 27 ABY as part of their conquest of the galaxy. The system remained under the invaders' control between 27 ABY and 29 ABY.[2] At some point no earlier than 36 ABY, Thisspias was mentioned in a guide to various species of the galaxy that was based on the research notes of sentientologist Mammon Hoole.[3]

Inhabitants[]

Thisspiasian-NEGAS

The Thisspiasians were native to Thisspias.

Thisspias was the homeworld of the Thisspiasians, a sentient species of omnivorous reptiles with four arms and a serpentine, prehensile tail.[3] The Thisspiasians spoke the Thisspiasian language.[4] The population of Thisspias numbered between 100 million and 500 million around 25 ABY.[2] The homeworld of the Thisspiasians was ruled by an absolute monarchy that remained unchanged for millennia. The position of Blood Monarch was hereditary, although a democratically elected parliament[3] deals with most matters of state,[4] including much of the planet's legislation.[3]

Many[4] inhabitants of Thisspias believed that the monarchy was degenerate and corrupt, and tied to archaic customs that were irrelevant in the modern times.[3] Although the monarchy took periodic strides toward catching up with changing realities,[4] during the reign of the New Republic and its successor, the Galactic Alliance, the Thisspiasians had become convinced that the planet's leadership had undergone very little evolution, continuing to practice a decadent lifestyle and remaining tied to antiquated political traditions.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Thisspias was first mentioned in the 1999 book Star Wars Episode I Who's Who: A Pocket Guide to the Characters of The Phantom Menace, which was authored by Ryder Windham.[16] The first visual depiction of Thisspias was on a 2001 map of the Star Wars galaxy designed by James King and Laurence Butler and included with the first issue of The Official Star Wars Fact File magazine.[17] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Thisspias system, and therefore Thisspias itself, in grid square O-8.[2]

In The New Essential Guide to Characters, a reference book written by Daniel Wallace[10] and published on April 23, 2002,[18] the preposition "in" is used in conjunction with the proper name "Ratamesh" when providing context for the Thisspias alcazar, suggesting that they were both locations on Thisspias.[10] In the Power of the Jedi Sourcebook, a Wizards of the Coast roleplaying game sourcebook[11] published in August 2002,[19] most of the wording regarding Ratamesh from The New Essential Guide to Characters is kept, except the preposition "on" is used, suggesting instead that it was an astronomical object separate from Thisspias. This article assumes the latter source is correct.[11]
