For other uses, see Derek (disambiguation).

Derek Torent[3] was a fair-skinned Human male[1] with brown hair and brown eyes.[2] He served as an Imperial Navy trooper sergeant during the Galactic Civil War fought between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Prior to the Battle of Yavin, Torent was among the Imperial Navy troopers assigned to the Death Star battlestation. Death Star troopers such as himself served as security guards, monitoring sensor arrays, and handling hangar traffic control.[1]

Torent was a senior watch trooper who served at the Death Star's command center. Vigilant in his duties, he monitored external sensor data, scanning for Alliance activity. Torent wore the standard uniform for Death Star troopers, along with a headset comlink.[4] He wielded an E-11 blaster rifle, and on at least one occasion wore his helmet over the standard-issue Imperial officer's uniform.[5] He also wielded another type of blaster rifle,[2] and his eyebrows were gray prior to the Battle of Yavin.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Origins and name[]

Derek Torent was on the set for Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the first film of the original trilogy,[6] although it is difficult to tell if the character appears in the film itself.[7] Following the film's May 25, 1977 release,[8] the June 1977[9] Star Wars Coloring Book included a picture of Torent.[10] This article treats the latter book as the first in-universe Star Wars product to include Torent, based on it being difficult to tell if he appears in the A New Hope film.

The November 1998 Special Edition Limited expansion set of Decipher, Inc.'s Star Wars Customizable Card Game first coined the "Torent" name for the character.[4] He would be later given the first name "Derek" by the Death Star Owner's Technical Manual, released in 2013.[3]

Inconsistencies and other representations/media[]

In 1978, Kenner made a Torent action figure for the Star Wars toy line. Originally named "Death Squad Commander,"[5] the figure name was changed to "Star Destroyer Commander" when it was re-released in 1980 for the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back toy line.[11] Because no Star Wars media has established Torent as being part of a death squad or serving on a Star Destroyer, this article makes no assumptions of Torent performing either responsibility.

While the original "Death Squad/Star Destroyer Commander" figure showed Torent with black eyebrows,[5][11] both the 1998 Kenner Star Wars: The Power of the Force[2] and the 2007 Hasbro Inc. Star Wars: 30th Anniversary Collection toy lines depict Torent with brown eyebrows, differing from the gray eyebrows visible in his in-universe production photo.[12] In 2012, Hasbro also used an edited version of Torent's production photo for the "Imperial Navy Commander" figure in their Star Wars: The Vintage Collection toy line.[13]
