When nearly ready to leave, a group of Sanyassan Marauders attacked the village, killing many and capturing the rest. Unfortunately, only Cindel survived.
The Towanis spoke a mysterious language, perhaps a dialect of Basic, which they taught to the Ewoks. However it was not enough for those creatures to understand proper Basic a year later, when they met Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2 and the rest of the rebels. The origins of that language, its relation to Basic, and why the Towanis differentiated themselves from the rest of the galaxy is unknown.

Behind the scenesEdit
Although the home planet of the Towani family is unknown, Cindel does reveal one minor bit of information about the planet. In Caravan of Courage, she remarks to Wicket that "I wish we had furry creatures like you where I came from." This implies that the home planet of the Towani family, at least from what Cindel has seen, has no such creatures with fur.
Since the events of the two Ewok films take place prior to the Battle of Endor, much fan debate has arisen over what language the Towanis speak. While in the films it appears as though the family is speaking Basic, this cannot be the case; Wicket Wystri Warrick becomes fluent in Cindel's language as per The Battle for Endor, yet doesn't understand Leia Organa in Return of the Jedi. The current retcon is that family is not speaking Basic, but some other language "dubbed" for the benefit of the audience.
