Turkana was an Outer Rim planet that, by 2 BBY, served as a regional headquarters and operations sector for Senator Mon Mothma's secret organized rebellion against the Galactic Empire, which eventually became the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Galactic Empire ambushed an Alliance task force after it assembled above Turkana, but ultimately the rebels won the ensuing battle.

Description[]

Turkana was a planet located within an intersecting portion of the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the Slice regions.[2]

History[]

By 2 BBY,[3] Turkana was an operations headquarters for an organized rebellion against the Galactic Empire secretly led by Senator Mon Mothma. The world was noted as such in a map of the galaxy that listed rebel safe worlds, starfighter hubs of level five or higher, operations headquarters, shadow planets, and deep space caches. The map was made for Mothma and was ultimately collected by archivist Hendri Underholt for the archive of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files.[4]

The Battle of Turkana saw the first clash between TIE/IN interceptors and T-65 X-wing starfighters (pictured in an engagement).

The rebellion became official as the Alliance to Restore the Republic later[4] in 2 BBY.[5] An Alliance task force eventually assembled in secret above Turkana, using Golan Ribbon tankers to refuel their starships. However, the challenging procedure of their refueling method led to an Imperial Navy squadron ambushing them, leading to the Battle of Turkana. The battle saw the first engagement between rebel T-65 X-wing starfighters and Imperial TIE/IN interceptors, with the rebels ultimately emerging victorious.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Turkana was introduced into the current Star Wars canon via a mention in the thirty-second issue of De Agostini's magazine series Star Wars: Build the Millenium Falcon,[1] published around August 26, 2015.[6] The planet originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, first appearing in the 1993 LucasArts video game Star Wars: X-Wing.[7]
