The Tynnans were a species of sentient mammals native to Tynna. Their homeworld was part of the Expansion Region. They were excellent swimmers, though they had poor vision. A Tynnan could survive the extremely cold waters of their homeworld. The Tynnan's homeworld, Tynna, was invaded by the Yuuzhan Vong during the Yuuzhan Vong War in 26 ABY.

[edit] Biology and appearance

"My appearance, admittedly, is not one to inspire confidence or awe."
Odumin[src]

The Tynnans were small water mammals, averaging 1.4 meters in height, and covered with a thick layer of blubber as insulation against the cold waters of their homeworld,[1] and as such they were comfortable with temperatures as low as -50 degrees Celsius.[8] This insulation gave them a plump form that many species viewed as cute and pudgy. However, they had substantial strength and stamina and were highly intelligent. Tynnans had two large buckteeth, an evolutionary holdover from their ancestors that used to gnaw wood in order to build river dams. Having long ceased this behavior, each succeeding Tynnan generation grew shorter teeth. Tynnans were able to hold their breath for long periods, enabling them to spend nearly as much time in water as on land. Tynnans had poor eyesight,[1] but this was compensated for by excellent hearing and smell.[2]

[edit] Society and culture

"I've been to Tynna. It's one of the most beautiful worlds in the Expansion Region. And the Tynnans are probably one of the most well-informed and well-intentioned species anywhere."
Belindi Kalenda[src]

Tynnans were a pragmatic people, shying away from religion and mythology which they believed often lead to conflict. They planned activities meticulously, giving attention to the smallest details; these plans were then carried out with great enthusiasm and dynamism.[1]

For thousands of years, the Tynnans selected their government representatives based on a planet-wide lottery. Their leaders then served for one year, after which they were ineligible for re-selection for the next six years.[9] The government was run from the Tynna Central Government Building prior to 22 BBY,[5] and later from the Tanallay Surge complex legislative and recreational complex. Due to the random nature of selection, most of the pragmatic Tynnans ensured they were well informed on political and governmental issues in case they were called upon to serve in the legislature.[2] Occasionally, however, as in the case of Dawson, Tynnans rejected such a system. An impulsive and carefree youth, Dawson fled the planet after being drawn from the lottery.[4]

Many lived around Water Park.[2]

[edit] History

"This is obviously an act of terrorism. What did the Republic do to stop this? Where are our Jedi? That's it for Tynna. I'll be contacting Count Dooku once we can establish new government headquarters somewhere."
Razelfiin[src]

The Tynnan homeworld, lying in a sheltered corner of the Expansion Region, was discovered by Republic scouts millennia before the rise of the Empire. After negotiations with the shrewd Tynnans, the Republic went ahead with full-scale corporate development, while protecting the natural beauty of the planet. The Tynnan share of the resulting profits was reinvested into society, resulting in one of the most affluent per capita worlds in the Republic.[2] Some time during its membership in the Republic, a collection of Sith materials was hidden on the planet; it was later uncovered by the Jedi Order in the process of preventing the rising of a Sith cult.[10]

Despite their affluence in the Republic, in 22 BBY the Tynnans prepared to secede from the Republic after a suspected terrorist attack on Tynna. Within the space of two hours the Tynna Central Government Building had been completely destroyed by an infestation of stone mites. Reacting against the lack of Republic and Jedi prevention of the incident, the recently selected planetary leader Razelfiin declared her intention to contact Count Dooku and quit the Republic.[5] Nonetheless, their senate representative, Senator Streamdrinker, continued to serve in the Galactic Senate until he was arrested in 19 BBY as part of a suspected conspiracy against the Republic.[6][11]

Following the Republic victory over the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the subsequent transition into the Galactic Empire, Tynna reentered the galactic fold and was appointed an Imperial governor. With little respect for their systems, he was determined to increase the profit-producing capacity of the Tynnan, pressuring the legislative into following his goals. While the natives tried to accommodate his views, this did not satisfy the governor.[9] The Empire eventually launched a full-scale invasion of the homeworld; Tynnan foresight, however, had predicted such a move and they had already installed an impenetrable planetary shield. These defences allowed them to resist the invasion and protect their planet from conquest.[1]

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Tynna fell to a Yuuzhan Vong force composed of a several warships. While the Battle of Tynna was observed by some New Republic Intelligence officers, there was nothing they could do to prevent the planet's fall; the Tynna defense force numbered no more than 200 starfighters and quickly fell to superior forces. A group of 200 Tynnans met the Yuuzhan Vong landing forces outside the Tanallay Surge complex to surrender the planet. The conquerers swiftly set about bioforming the planet's ocean, changing the blue waters a sickly pale yellow, preparing them to grow dovin basals for use in later stages of their conquest of the galaxy. The Vong also planned on reeducated and training the Tynnans to serve as carers for the growths.[12] Dovin basals from Tynna were later used in the conquest of Caluula Station.[13]

[edit] Tynnans in the galaxy

Due to the wealth of their planet and the state-run economy, many Tynnans were free to travel the galaxy as tourists.[2] Two Tynnans who eventually settled off-world were Cham and Nog Teleus. Around 31 BBY, they settled in the Cularin system after making fortunes working in industry. The pair hosted a large celebration to mark the 125th anniversary of the Cularin Compact, putting their large art collection on display. A number of items were stolen by Gomalo, a Rodian slaver recently released from prison, including a sculpture he had created. It contained the locations of a nebula in which he had stowed the body of a Jedi Knight frozen in carbonite. The Teleus' artworks were later recovered by Ezra Du'Re of the Office of Peace and Security.[7] Notable Tynnans were Odumin, a Territorial Manager of the CSA, the thief and demolitions expert Dawson, and Streamdrinker, an Old Republic senator. Odumin later released his memoirs.[1]
