An unmanned energy refinery was a type of deep space industrial plant.

The refineries were used to manufacture subatomic knots of space-time essential as components in gravitational devices used throughout the galaxy, like repulsorlift generators, inertial compensators and tractor beam projectors. These facilities were enormous, as they were constructed around black holes.
