Bane was the first of the modern Sith, the one who started the rule that there could only be one Dark Lord and one Apprentice.
He was trained by Lord Qordis but was guided by an arrogant, although true, belief that he was the future of the Sith. He became a vehement rival of Lord Kaan, who had formed a Sith Brotherhood of Darkness, and who had him poisoned by Githany, who kissed him with poison on her lips. Bane's strength in the Force was enough to save him from death, but he thought he was stronger than that and blamed his near demise on the amount of Sith who had declared themselves Dark Lords, spreading the Dark Side too thin across the order.
First he retrieved his red-bladed lightsaber from a family of salvagers by slaying the children and father who had discovered it. And then he sought out the antivenom from a medicine man on Ruusan, threatening to kill the doctor's daughter if he didn't hand it over. Finally cured, he returned to confront Kaan and his army. Although Kaan denied posioning him, Bane commended his rival on "the one brave decision of his life". Listening to Kaan's briefing he critisized the others for not thinking like a Sith; instead of relying on weapons and troops, they should have been focusing the power of the Dark Side against their foe!
That night the Lords gathered on a rocky outcropping above the forests of Ruusan, and through Bane they focused their power to destroy the forest. An blast of fire and energy swept through the terrain, burning and destroying everything in it's path, but the Sith broke off from the group to face the Jedi in combat. An exasperated Bane tried to call them back, but only Kopecz stopped to long enough to tell Bane that fear had driven them to stop. It was then that Bane realised that they were doomed, unable to fit into his vision.
It was not long after that event that Bane came across a young girl called Rain (Zannah), she had been brought to Ruusan by the Jedi and formed a friendship with a Bouncer, and when her friend was killed mistakenly, anger drew her to kill using the Force. Bane thought he had found his first apprentice in this girl and took her under his wing. Meanwhile, Kaan was preparing to use a thought bomb to destroy the Jedi Army of Light, but ended up destroying all of the Jedi and all of the Sith present.
Bane survived along with Zannah and they stumbled across her cousin Tomcat (Darovit), who tried to stop Bane. Zannah caused Darovit's hand to explode, Bane questioned her on why she allowed him to live, and said that she was still young. As he gazed at the thought bomb, Githany reappeared, apparently having survived, but not by much as she literally fell apart in front of his eyes. At some point Bane decided not to take Zannah as his apprentice, but it is unknown whether she was killed or simply left on Ruusan.
After leaving Ruusan, Bane headed for Onderon in his ship, Valcyn. He hoped to learn secrets from deep inside the tomb of the ancient Sith Lord Freedon Nadd, but his past retruned to haunt him. The ghostly spirit of his fomer mentor, Lord Qordis, chided him for abandoning the Brotherhood. Bane insisted that he was only furthering the Sith cause, but Qordis's spirit created a malfunction in the starship controls and Bane plummeted down into the forest of the Beast Moon of Dxun. Bane survived the crash, but his ship was destroyed beyond hope of repair. The jungle itself seemed intent on stopping Bane, but he pushed on nonetheless. He was attacked by beasts and monsters, and cried out in frustration. In reply the spirit of Lord Kaan appeared to him, offering help. Bane followed Kaan's ghostly silhouette and eventually found himself at the ruined crypt of Freedon Nadd's tomb. He could feel the Dark Side in the tomb, and knew he would find what he was looking for here. Kaan lead him to a Sith Holocron, where he was attacked by barnacle-like creatures called orbalisks, they attached themselves to Bane's body, causing tremendous pain as they became a part of him.
After spending days studying from the Holocron he exited the tomb with a new vision: Not only would there be just two Lord's at a time, but the armies and minions the Sith had once relied on would be done away with too - slowly and in secrecy the Sith would erode the Republic until the time was right for them to reveal themselves to the Jedi once more.
Taming a flying beast using the powers of the Dark Side, he mounted it like the fabled Beast-riders and rode towards the edge of the atmosphere, where he nudged the entire moon closer to it's planet, Onderon, so he could cross to the inhabited world to find his apprentice.
Bane's plan worked, it would be an entire millennium before the Jedi Order discovered that the Sith had survived the Battle of Ruusan.
