[edit] Early life

Maris Brood

As with many members of the Jedi Order, Maris Brood's Force sensitivity was discovered when she was an infant, and she was taken to be trained as a Jedi Knight. However, Brood's Jedi Master favored an unorthodox type of training, which shunned the formal training of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Instead, Brood was instructed in the Jedi arts on board the starship Gray Pilgrim, which traversed the Outer Rim Territories.[3]

During the later years of the Clone Wars, Brood and her master served the Galactic Republic in the conflict against the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[4] In 19 BBY, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine issued Order 66 to the Republic's clone army. The directive stated that, in the event that the Jedi were ever deemed a threat to the security of the Republic, then clone forces were ordered to use lethal force to eliminate them. The attempted arrest of Palpatine by Master Mace Windu and other members of the Jedi Council following the revelation that the Chancellor was a Sith Lord triggered the initiation of the order. Palpatine also used the execution of Order 66 to reformed the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, and name himself Emperor.[5]

Brood and her master were aboard the Gray Pilgrim in the Outer Rim at the time Order 66 was issued. Although they were distanced from the immediate events that followed, such as the execution of Jedi Knights by their Clone troopers, Brood's master felt the ripples in the Force caused by the widespread killing of Jedi. Brood's master resolved to discover what had happened to the Order, and sent transmissions to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. His queries were met with silence. Wishing to resolve the mystery of what had befallen the Jedi, he took his personal starfighter to investigate. Leaving Brood behind as he set out for the Jedi Temple, he constantly sent back transmissions of his findings in his wake. One such transmission revealed that an individual known as Darth Vader had played a substantial role in the destructions of the Order. Shortly after, Brood's master disappeared and he never returned.[3]

Brood was left feeling abandoned, and was filled with hate and anger towards Vader. Desperate for revenge, she set off to confront him. Before she could attempt this, she was intercepted by one of the last surviving Jedi Masters, the Togruta council member, Shaak Ti. Ti managed to dissuade Maris from her quest of vengeance, convincing the young Zabrak to come with her to Felucia and to hide from the Galactic Empire.[3] Brood became Ti's new Padawan.[4]

[edit] Felucia

"Maris, we are among the last of the Jedi. While we live, the Order survives. I cannot allow you to be captured or killed by the Empire."
―Master Shaak Ti to her apprentice[src]

Under Master Ti's tutelage, Brood continued to learn the ways of the Jedi on Felucia. However, despite Ti's positive influence on the young Padawan, she was unable to dissolve Brood's desire for revenge on Vader completely.[6] While Ti also instructed the native Felucian Shamans in the ways of the Force so that they could eventually resist any attempt by Imperial forces to eradicate them, Brood was left to wander the planet's wilderness where she tested herself against the native animal life and explored the Force along her own path.[4]

Brood and Ti sense the approach of Darth Vader's secret apprentice.

By 3 BBY, Darth Vader learned of Master Ti's presence on the planet and dispatched his secret apprentice to eliminate her. Ti and Brood watched the approach of the apprentice's ship, the Rogue Shadow from a clearing in the Felucian jungle, and sensed the assassin's presence through the Force. Although Brood was desperate to fight and exact a portion of her vengeance against Vader, Ti denied her request to face Vader's minion at her side, telling her that she was one of the last of the Jedi and her survival ensured the continuation of the Jedi Order. Despite Brood's protestations, Ti instructed the Zabrak to flee to the Rancor Graveyard, and to await her return.[6]

Ti never returned to Brood, having been defeated by the apprentice in a lightsaber duel and falling into a sarlacc pit. Grief-stricken and enraged, Brood found that her hate and desire for vengeance became more pronounced, and she came to hate Master Ti for dying and abandoning her. Falling towards the Dark Side of the Force, she continued to train the Felucian Shamans, but her rage corrupted her teachings. The Shamans also began to fall to the Dark Side as a result.[6] Establishing herself as the leader of the Shamans, Brood also trained many of the planet's rancors to do her bidding, including a bull rancor that she used to defend her domain against intruders.[4]

Despite Brood's attempts at remaining in hiding, the Empire discovered her presence and mounted an invasion of Felucia. With the natives now more fierce and aggressive due to their usage of the Dark Side, a bloody conflict ensued between the Empire's invasion force and the Felucians. Wary of being exposed, Brood made sure she kept herself hidden from the Imperial forces and proceeded only to spy on them, attempting to gauge if Darth Vader was with the Imperial contingent or not.[6]

[edit] Encounter with Starkiller

"This planet…it corrupted me. But you…you saved me."
―Maris Brood[src]

Shortly before the invasion of Felucia, Leia Organa, daughter of Alderaanian Senator Bail Organa had been sent to Kashyyyk, officially as an Senatorial observer to oversee the construction of a new skyhook. In reality, Emperor Palpatine had ordered that Leia Organa be held under armed guard to prevent Bail Organa from speaking out against the Empire. Desperate to get his daughter back, Senator Organa traveled to Felucia, in the hopes of convincing Master Ti to assist in the rescue of his daughter. Brood found that her need to exact vengenance was replaced by fears that Vader would find her and kill her now that the Empire had arrived on Felucia. When Felucian scouts reported to her that a shuttle had arrived on the planet, she investigated and discovered Senator Organa. Taking him prisoner, she intended to trade him for her life, should Vader come searching for her. She incarcerated him in the Rancor Graveyard.[6]

Vader's secret apprentice returned to the planet shortly after, although this time he was working towards assembling an alliance of rebels and dissidents opposed to the Empire after having been betrayed by his former Master. On the advice of Jedi Master Rahm Kota, in whose company he was travelling, advised him that Organa would be a powerful and influential ally in his quest. Only knowing that Organa had disappeared after attempting to contact Master Ti, the young apprentice intended to start his search for the senator at his last known location. The presence of the senator's shuttle on the planet proved that Organa was still on the world, and the apprentice set out in search of him. Discovering the presence of the Empire on the world as well, he was forced to fight his way through both Imperial and Felucian forces, eventually reaching the Rancor Graveyard and finding the incarcerated senator.[6]

Brood, laying in wait for the apprentice, was unwilling to fight the young man directly. Commanding her Bull rancor to attack him, she engaged him in surprise assaults, using the Force to cloak her presence then attack while the rancor occupied him. Despite her tactics, the apprentice was able to kill the Bull rancor, forcing Brood to face him in combat personally. Utilizing her skills with telekinesis and cloaking abilities, Brood fought with twin guard shotos. The duel was a furious affair, although the apprentice was able to defeat her. Wounding her using Force lightning, Organa urged the young man to kill Brood. The corrupted Jedi, however, begged for her life, claiming that he'd redeemed her through defeating her. The apprentice relented, allowing the young woman to flee in the jungle. Organa, however, protested, likening her to Darth Vader before his fall. Despite the protestations, the young apprentice stood by his decisions, allowing Brood to go free.[6]

[edit] Personality and traits

"Oh, we're not crazy. We've just embraced the power of the Dark side."
―Maris Brood to Starkiller.[src]

Undisciplined and emotion, Brood, however, was loyal to both her masters, the death of her first master led to Maris' first wave of lust for vengeance on Vader. As the Empire spread their influence and power over yet more planets and systems in the galaxy, Brood was found by Shaak Ti and taken to Felucia. With a lust for war and combat, Maris wished to engage Vader directly, and bring the fight to the Empire. Ti, however, advised against this, noting how Maris was open to giving in to the base emotions that could lead to the Dark side of the Force, as she eventually did fall too.[6]

After Ti's death, this theory was proved correct with Maris falling to the dark side of the Force, Maris' sense of abandonment, betrayal towards Ti and feelings of anger and a desire for vengeance against Vader taking control. Brood claimed this was due to the nature of the planet itself. These feelings, however, were later replaced by a desperate wish to place her own life in importance before anything else, Brood taking Senator Organa captive to trade with Vader, should the need arise, just to keep her own life intact.[6]

[edit] Powers and abilities

Maris Brood was born a Force-sensitive, and her potential was realized by her first Master and, later, Shaak Ti, who proceeded to train her in the use of the Force and the way of the Jedi. Trained on both her first Master's ship, the Gray Pilgrim, and on the planet of Felucia by Shaak Ti, Maris Brood wasn't considered strong enough by Shaak Ti to face Galen Marek when he arrived on the planet to kill Ti. Brood utilised twin red guard shotos in combat,[7] using Force throw in combat as well as fighting at close range using melee attacks. In an attempt to defeat the secret apprentice on Felucia, Maris Brood showed an ability in Force Cloak, hiding from Galen Marek before launching vicious attacks upon him.[6]

Quick and agile in her movements, Brood utilised this to her advantage in combat, and had mastered a fighting style unique to herself that relied on fast strikes, similar to Ataru. Using the combination of Force cloak and her speed, Maris, although undisciplined and often emotional, was able to launch withering attacks upon her opponents in combat.[6]

[edit] Behind the scenes

Leaked Hasbro toy catalogues were the first sources to reveal Maris's name. Her name was later confirmed by the March 2008 issue of Game Informer.[8]

Early images of the Force Unleashed figures in both the 2"[9] and 3.75" scales[10] showed Maris wielding twin green-bladed lightsabers with tonfa-shaped hilts. However, in later promotional artwork and in Hasbro's figure, Maris Brood is depicted with red-bladed sabers. The handles on the final production figure are in the wrong place, forcing Maris to hold them near the blade rather than at the far end.[11]

Maris Brood was voiced and portrayed by actress Adrienne Wilkinson.

Maris can be selected as a playable skin in The Force Unleashed video game through the cheat code MARISBROOD. When selected, however, cutscenes are disabled.
