[edit] OtherI think my work on Death Star I needs special mention: I sorted out all that "missing plans" crap with a major "History" section overhaul, as well as added some specs and new pics. I performed a similar "Specifications" edit on Death Star II. Some stuff that I wrote for the Siege of Foerost got transformed into the bulk of the Battle of Anaxes article. Other articles I've made significant contributions to (not from scratch):
[edit] Rants & Raves[edit] Wiki = bad writersSeriously, people. You're not in a chatroom. Try to write well, with correct grammar, spelling, and—even a sense of style. Don't be an idiot. I even had to correct a non-capitalized "i" today. Dang. Or, as the young Oscar Wildes I'm referring to would write it: "seeriusly people your not in a chatroom try to right good with correct grammer speeling and even a since of style. don't b an idiot i even had to correct an non-cap i 2day shit." [edit] People who only add sources... ARRGH!Seriously, people. If all you're doing is going around adding more "Appearances" and "Sources" to stuff, and not writing or fixing articles, don't even bother. Go away. Meanwhile, us hardcore members will be doing something that matters: fixing redlinks. Geez. [edit] Lincoln and PalpatineIs Emperor Palpatine President George W. Bush? I contend that there are many more similarities between Palpatine and - dare I say it - our almost-dictator and "Great American", Abraham Lincoln. 1. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith both show a group of dissatisfied systems trying to separate from the Republic, just as in the American Civil War, when dissatisfied states tried to secede from the American government. 2. The separatists in Star Wars name themselves the "Confederacy of Independent Systems", just as the Southern states in the U.S. declared themselves the "Confederate States of America". 3. Both confederacies show a marked lean toward free trade, while both Republics show a tendency toward taxation. However, the Star Wars CIS is disatisfied with the corruption and philibustering of the weak system, while the CSA seceded because they disliked the increasing amount of power being given to the North and the executive branch. 4. In RotS, Palpatine demands extensive war powers, just as American President Abraham Lincoln suspended writs of Habeas Corpus and imposed extensive restrictions on the American people, including trials and executions without juries. 5. Some characters in the film are loyal to the Republic but display a marked discomfort with Palpatine's demand for an army, just as Lincoln's call for volunteers to end the secession alienated many and drove states like Virginia and others into the Confederate fold. 6. It is referenced several times in Revenge of the Sith that Palpatine controlled the courts—indeed, Lincoln attempted to have Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney arrested for his objections to Lincoln's constitutional abuses. 7. Both Palpatine's Clone Army and Lincoln's Union Army were called the "Grand Army of the Republic". Coincidence? I think not. 8. During the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era, federal governors were put in charge of the Southern states. During the post-Clone War era, Imperial governors were put in charge of the various systems and sectors. 9. In The Phantom Menace, the executive (Palpatine) pushes aside his predecessor, Finis Valorum, because he has been ineffective in dealing with the crisis before them -- a complaint identical to the one Lincoln made about his predecessor, James Buchanan. 10. The Jedi are split in a manner very similar to the American graduates of West Point. Some flock to the banner of the rebellion, while quite a few others push the Republican Union. 11. Is Anakin Skywalker George Armstrong Custer, slaughtering lesser people whom he refers to as "animals"? Are Tusken Raiders, living in their teepee-like huts, American Indians? Like Custer, Anakin kills not only the men... but the women, and the children. 12. Is Anakin Ulysses S. Grant? A right hand man of the executive, essential to putting down the rebellion and "bringing peace"? 13. The Civil War was precipitated by trade and tax disputes in a serene, agricultural area - the American South. The Clone Wars were precipitated by trade and tax disputes in a serene, agricultural area - Naboo, as seen in the events of The Phantom Menace. Does this make Queen Amidala a parallel to Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina? Both were ignored by their legislative organizations. 14. John Wilkes Booth, upon murdering Lincoln, declared "Sic Semper Tyrannus!" Count Dooku is also referred to as Darth Tyranus. A stretch? Maybe. 15. Slavery. The Republic tacetly lets it continue on Outer Rim planets such as Tatooine. So did the U.S. Qui-Gon Jinn replies in The Phantom Menace, "I didn't come here to free slaves." So, is Palpatine President Lincoln? No. He's what Lincoln could have become. [edit] Further evidence begging comparisonWhy this tirade against "one of our greatest presidents", you ask? Simple. He was the worst in history. In addition to the great myth that Lincoln was an abolitionist (he preserved the union for economic reasons, nothing more, and after the war wanted to deport all ex-slaves), here are some other little known facts about our 16th president of the United States: 1. Lincoln declared war without congressional approval, intentionally delaying sessions of Congress to ensure full-fledged combat. By the time the legislature convened, a de facto war was waging, and there was little they could do but approve of it. 2. Newspapers that even slightly questioned Lincoln's motives regarding the war were shut down, their publishers arrested without trial of a writ of Habeas Corpus. 3. In places such as Maryland, Lincoln imprisoned Confederate sympathizers who had done no wrong, save expressing their opinions. 4. Citizens in Maryland were prevented from voting in order to ensure the election of pro-Union candidates. Lincoln went so far as to have his army vote in the residents' stead... even those who didn't live in the state. 5. Numerous times, Lincoln blatantly showed a lean towards imprisonment - and sometimes execution - without trial. 6. Lincoln assumed most-to-all legislative powers during his reign. 7. Lincoln often put himself above all branches of government, supposedly "setting aside the Constitution to preserve it." 8. 10,000 people were imprisoned under Lincoln for "seditious acts" (often times merely criticizing his actions). Compare this to Mussolini's 2,000. [edit] Miscellany[edit] Image ArtImage art courtesy of my good friend, Chris Beaver, specially created as a gift several years ago.
