- "It wasn't the Republic. It was the Jedi. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Jedi Masters, Jedi Knights, Jedi Padawans: an entire army of Jedi."
- ―Kopecz reporting to Kaan on the loss of the Third Battle of Ruusan.
The Army of Light was a Jedi army formed towards the end of the New Sith Wars. Formed by the Jedi Master Lord Hoth in 1,002 BBY, it's purpose was to destroy the Sith that made up the leaders of the Brotherhood of Darkness. After it was formed, the Army of Light scored an important victory against the Sith, irradicating the forces on the planet of Ruusan.
After this defeat, Kaan, the leader of the Brotherhood of Darkness, ordered all of the Sith (except those studying in the Sith academy on Korriban) to Ruusan with the intent of raising an army so large he could crush the Jedi in a single stroke. After several battles, the war showed no sign of abating.
At the time of the Seventh Battle of Ruusan, Kaan had been given a new weapon from Darth Bane - the Thought bomb. Bane told Kaan the Sith technique would grant him victory over the Jedi, when in reality Bane knew it would destroy all the Sith on Ruusan, allowing him to create his new Order of the Sith Lords under the Rule of Two. When a Sith Master, Kopecz, revealed this to the Jedi commander Valenthyne Farfalla, Hoth knew that the way to end the war was to force Kaan to use the thought bomb. Taking a hundred Jedi with him into the caves where the Sith hid, Hoth led the attack, and was caught in the blast when Kaan detinated the bomb. This was the end of both the Brotherhood of Darkness and the New Sith Wars.
Shortly after the Ruusan campaign came to a close, the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, Tarsus Valorum, set into motion the Ruusan Reformation - a plan to rebuild the Republic after several centuries of conflict with the Sith. This order also dissolved the Army of Light.
History
Edit
Origins
Edit
- "Lord Hoth realized that the Jedi Order was spread too thin trying to defend the Republic. He's gathered them all into a single host with one goal: destroy the users of the Dark Side."
- ―Kopecz
As the New Sith Wars progressed, the Brotherhood of Darkness began to force back the armies of the Galactic Republic. During 1,002 BBY, all of the Republic's fleets had fallen back to protect the Core Worlds. During this retreat, the Lord Hoth (individual) had ben convincing members of the Jedi Order to stage a counter-strike at the advancing Sith. Meanwhile, many Jedi stayed with various groups of the Republic Navy, aiding them with techniques such as battle meditation.[1].
Under the command , this army of Jedi - containing Jedi Masters, Knights and Padawans - launched an assault on the Sith stronghold of Ruusan. They destroyed the entire Sith presence on and around the planet, including an orbiting fleet of warships.[1]
The Ruusan Campaign
Edit
- "We will assemble our own army of Sith - one capable of destroying Hoth and his Army of Light!"
- ―Kaan
After conquering the industrial planet of Brentaal IV, the majority of the Sith fleet occupied the Bormea sector. The Sith Lord Kopecz brought new of the defeat to the leader of the Brotherhood of Darkness, Kaan, aboard the Sith flagship, the Nightfall. He revealed the news of the army of Jedi calling itself the Army of Light. Kopecz suggested using the whole Sith fleet to obliterate the Jedi, but Kaan dismissed this plan, believing ordinary soldiers to be incapable of deafeating such a foe. Kaan also interpreted it as a rouse to lure the fleets from the offensive and conceeding space again to the Republic. To counter this new threat, Kaan decided to summon all those trained in the Dark Side from the various academies across the Brotherhood's controlled space and lead them to Ruusan to wipe out the Jedi order, allowing the Sith to take control of the Republic.[1]
Between 1,002 and 1,001 BBY, the First Battle of Ruusan had seen the Brotherhood of Darkness take control of the planet and the Republic fail to reclaim it. However, it was the immergance of the Army of Light at the Third Battle of Ruusan that turned the tide of the Ruusan campaign, irradicating all the regular soldiers that made up the Sith base and orbiting fleet and claiming the planet.[1]
When the Brotherhood of Darkness arrived in force with their own army of Force-sensitive Sith - including Marauders, Assassins, and the training apprentices from the several academies the Brotherhood had established - the Fourth Battle of Ruusan forced the conflict down onto the surface of the planet. The campaign became a bloody and vicious affair, and the Army of Light was forced to act both as an army and a protector of the thousands of refugees created by the months of fighting. The Sith took advantage of the Army of Light's compassion, striking where the Jedi spread themselves thin to protect the natives.[1]
With the Sith pressing their advantage, the Army of Light desperately needed reinforcements. Jedi Master Valenthyne Farfalla offered to argue their case to the Jedi council, promising to bring three hundred Jedi to aid the cause. Unable to defeat the Brotherhood of Darkness in direct combat, Hoth ordered the Army of Light to hide in the forests of Ruusan until his return, enguaging guerilla tactics and hit-and-run strategies to further infuriate the Sith.[1]
While Farfalla was away, there were many other skirmishes between the two sides. The next of note became known as the Fourth Battle of Ruusan, when a unit of the Army of Light under the command of Kiel Charny and Lord Gale destroyed the Sith gun turrents. This allowed the other forces to attack the following morning in the Fifth Battle of Ruusan. Although this was a victory for the Army of Light, only Petja was able to return to bring the news to Lord Hoth. Charny and his men went to investigate what happened to Torr Snapit's ship after it crash-landed when attacked by Sith vessels, finding the force-sensitive children Hardin and Darovit.[2]
The next day, Charny led another assault against an attacking Sith force, While Hoth accompanied the caravans moving throught he forest. However, although several Sith minions weilded lightsabers in the battle, it transpired that there were no Dark Lords present. They were absent, preforming a ritual to destroy the forest where the Army of Light was hiding. The Brotherhood set alight the entire forest, destroying it completely, before attacking the exposed Jedi on swoops, but they were saved by the return of the Fairwind, Farfalla's ship, which had fought through the Sith blockade surrounding Ruusan. This victory when all seemed lost became the Sixth Battle of Ruusan. However, despite Farfalla's retun with the jedi he promised, Hoth was angry at the time it had taken, meaning many more Jedi died including their mutual friend Pernicar had perished in the attacks. When Hoth bitterly rejected Farfalla's aid, the equine Jedi took his forces and left[2], waiting outside the blockade once more.[1]
Seeing the error of his ways, Hoth sent Farfalla a message apologising for his behaviour and asking for any help the fellow Jedi might provide.[1]
The Seventh Battle of Ruusan
Edit
Many of the Sith forces fought to defend the caves while the Sith Lords performed the ritual necessary for the thought bomb. One Sith Lord who fought alongside them was Kopecz, who knew what would happen when Kaan detonated the bomb. Facing Farfalla, whom Kopecz knew from his time as a Jedi[1], the Sith Lord declared he would reveal Kaan's plan if Farfalla assured him of death in combat. Farfalla agreed, and killed Kopecz with his lightsaber.[2].
Upon being told the plan, Hoth knew the bomb would kill all Force-sensatives within its reach. But the general also realized that Kaan would not detonate the weapon until he knew the Jedi attacked, and if they did not, the Sith would escape. He asked for volunteers for the suicide mission to force Kaan to use his last weapon, but was surprised when almost every Jedi volunteered. Hoth took ninety-nine others to assault the caves while Farfalla arranged for the entrie Army of Light to retreat.[1]
The attack prompted Kaan to detonated the thought bomb, killing Hoth and his force. Miles away, Farfalla and the other troops felt the blast of the explosion. Farfalla assumed command of the Army of Light.[1]
The Ruusan Reformation
Edit
- "The Ary of Light was created in reaction to the Brotherhood of Darkness. With the Brotherhood gone, it no longer serves a purpose."
"It's purpose is to protect the Republic!"
"Protect it from whom? The Sith are gone." - ―Tarsus Valorum and Johun Othune
Once news of the Brotherhood's defeat reached the Holonet, to the galaxy at large the New Sith Wars were over, and the Senate wished to look to the future. As such, Chancellor of the Galactic Republic Tarsus Valorum devised the Ruusan Reformation. This new act would ensure that the Jedi Order worked under the supervision of the Judicial Department, and all Jedi renounced their military ranks, disbanding their military forces including those of the Army of Light.[3]
The Army's new leader, Farfalla, went to see Valorum with Hoth's former Padawan, Johun Othone. Although the Jedi diliked the ideas the Ruusan Reformation would bring, Valorum argued that the fear people had of the Jedi being instigators of the war with the Sith meant the Republic needed the Jedi's support to bring in a new era of peace and properity. Seeing the validity of Valorum's case, Farfalla reluctantly agreed to issue orders to comply with the proposal, and the Army of Light was dissolved.[3]
Organization and Structure
Edit
Leadership
Edit
As the only man to organise significant victories against the Sith[1], Lord Hord was the acting general of the Army of Light, although he himself was answerable to the Jedi Council. This caused friction between Hoth and the council during the Ruusan campaign, as Hoth needed more and more Jedi to fight that the Council were reluctant to send. It was the convincing of his second in command, Valenthyne Farfalla[3], that encouraged the Council to reinforce the war effort on Ruusan.[1]
Jedi
Edit
Initially the Army of Light was made up purely of Jedi of all stages of training (Masters, Knights and Padawans). It was this initial force that irradicated the Sith presence on during the Third Battle of Ruusan.[1]
Force Adepts
Edit
As the Sith brought in more reinforcements, so too did the Jedi. Both sides scoured the explored galaxy for Force-sensitives to boost their armies[1]. Although they recieved little or no formal training, both sides relied on their inate talent with The Force to help them fight. Torr Snapit was one such master who searched on behalf of the Army of Light, bringing Darovit, Hardin, Zannah, Sladak and Slatka to Ruusan.[2]
Infantry
Edit
While the Ruusan campaign was largely decreed as a war of the Jedi and the Brotherhood, both sides still had thousands of soldiers fighting for their cause. Within the Army of Light, these soldiers were a combination of Republic troops and Ruusan natives trying to defend their homes and families.
Arrangement of Forces
Edit
The Army of Light was separated into legions, each containing Jedi and non force-sensative soldiers. Major Orten Ledes was a high-ranking Officer in the Second Legion[3], while the Third Legion of Light was commanded by Jedi General New'arforrth[4].

Behind the scenes
Edit
In Jedi vs Sith Farfalla brings only a hundred Jedi to Ruusan, while it is Drew Karpyshyn's novel Darth Bane: Path of Destruction that says he brings three hundred. Also, Jedi vs Sith portays Farfalla sending an envoy to Hoth to apologise for their argument, while Path of Destruction states Hoth sends the initial envoy after Pernicar appears to him as a Force ghost.
The Army of Light's reference in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia states that "both opposing forces were wiped out by Lord Kaan's thought bomb" alongside an unnamed soldier in Jedi vs Sith who says "All the Lords, all the Jedi and all of the Sith... all gone" with a panel indicating the Jedi being killed by the thought bomb's blast. However, in Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, it is claimed most of the Army of Light survived by fleeing the areas surrounding the mountains on Ruusan while Lord Hoth led a team of Jedi voluteers into the caves where Kaan and the Brotherhood had hidden to force him to detonate the thought bomb.
