BiographyEdit

Working with HooleEdit

D-V9 was designed by Hoole at some point prior to 0 BBY. The two traveled to Tatooine, where DV-9 recorded the call of a Krayt dragon. Later in his life, he spoke of a desire to see the dead world of Kiva that he had possessed since shortly after he was programmed.

Adventures on D'vouranEdit

"Zoology lessons. I have the brain capacity of a supercomputer and I'm giving zoology lessons."
DV-9[src]

After the destruction of Alderaan by the Death Star, DV-9 spent much of his time as a personal tutor for Hoole's now orphaned niece and nephew, Tash and Zak Arranda, much to his dismay.[1]

Soon after Hoole adopted the Arrandas, DV-9 and the group were ripped out of hyperspace en route to the planet D'vouran. Upon landing on the planet, they were greeted by the indigenous and seemingly friendly Enzeen, including Chood. Chood escorted the group to the local cantina, the Don't Go Inn. Once there, they were held at blaster point by Smada the Hutt, who had had a long standing grudge against Hoole. The group were saved by the timely intervention of the Heroes of Yavin. To his misfortune, DV-9 was forced to listen to the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 as they related to him their misfortunes on Tatooine, while the organics of the two groups talked.[1]

The following day, while watching over Tash as she spoke with the local "madman," Kevreb Bebo Tash suddenly ran off with him into the forest with DV-9 in tow. Bebo brought her to a secret Imperial laboratory where he tried to warn her that the disappearances on D'vouran were caused by the planet itself, but was interrupted by DV-9 and his prerecorded krayt dragon roar. After being assured that Tash was in no danger, the two left to alert Hoole about the lab, though not before Bebo gave Tash a pendant that would keep her safe from the planet.[1]

Encountering Chood and some Enzeen on their way back to town, Tash began to greet them but stopped as she watched them suck nutrients from the ground. The Enzeen spotted them and charged, Tash ran far ahead of DV-9, and he was swarmed by Enzeen and left for scrap. A sudden groundquake disrupted the planet which swallowed up most of the villagers. Tash fled to Smada's fortress, where her and the recently captured Zak were threatened with death if they did not reveal the location of Hoole. They were saved by the timely arrival of Deevee, who struggled to the fortress and startled the court with another Krayt dragon roar. The trio fled, with Smada close behind, but ultimately, all four were captured by Chood and the Enzeen, and taken to the Heart of D'vouran. DV-9 was deactivated and missed the subsequent appearance of Hoole, who had been masquerading as an Enzeen, and the ensuing battle, where both Smada and Chood fell to their deaths inside the pit, taking the pendant with them, and causing a massive disruption to the planet. After being reactivated, DV-9and the organics ran to their ship, the Lightrunner only to get trapped in the planets molten surface. They were saved by the timely arrival of the Millennium Falcon. After being tailed by the planet for some time, it devoured itself and the Falcon jumped into hyperspace.[1]

Zombie uprising on NecropolisEdit

"The funeral rites of Necropolis are most impressive. I wish I could attend! Unfortunately, my search for a reliable starship dealer continues. Otherwise I wouldn't miss the funeral. It should be most interesting to watch,"
"Deevee! This isn't a field trip. It's a solemn occasion."
DV-9 and Tash Arranda[src]

The Heroes of Yavin dropped DV-9 and the group off at the tombworld, Necropolis, so they could purchase a replacement for the Lightrunner. Upon arriving, the group met the Master of Cerements, Pylum, and a young Necropolitan boy named Kairn. Kairn took them to a local hostel. As they arived, they found the bounty hunter Boba Fett, demanding information on the location of "Doctor" Cornelius Evazan. That night, Zak and Kairn sneaked into the graveyard. Zak encountered zombies, and while fleeing found Kairn dead of cryptberry poisoning. Evazan appeared and attacked Zak, but was quickly dispatched by Boba Fett. By that time the commotion had caused DV-9, Hoole, Tash, and a group of Necropolitans to the graveyard to investigate.[2]

The next day, instead of attending Kairns funeral, DV-9 was assigned to find a starship dealer. After the funeral DV-9 led them to Meego's Starship Emporium. As Meego pushed a flashy starship on Hoole, Zak wandered off to look at a Helix-class light interceptor, and returned breathless, claiming that he had just encountered the seemingly dead Evazan.[2]

The following day, after leaving on an excursion with Tash, Zak disappeared. DV-9 calculated the possibility of Zak's location, and found him dead, having seemingly poisoned himself with cryptberries. After the funeral, Tash managed to convince Hoole and DEV-9that Evazan may have been involved in Zak's death. While Tash and Hoole left to exhume Evazan's grave, DV-9 went to pick up the ship from Meego. Once there, Meego revealed that he had accidentally sold the ship to someone else, and suggested that he could sell Deevee another ship....for a few more credits. Deevee, knowing when he was being swindled, suggested that the Helix Interceptor was within their price range, but Meego refused, as it hadn't had its memory wiped yet. DV-9 gave a thinly veiled threat, that Hoole's Tal Nami friends would track down Meego if he swindled Hoole. Meego agreed to sell the ship, after considering the threat, and revealing to DV-9 that the ship, The Shroud, had been previously owned by Evazan. As DV-9 worked on the Shroud's computer, Meego protested that the computer hadn't been erased, but DV-9 silenced him with the promise of more credits. Delving through the memory banks, DV-9 found a file marked "REANIMATION OF DEAD TISSUE." Reading this, DV-9 came to the conclusion that Zak wasn't dead. Leaving the ship, DV-9 encountered Boba Fett, who accompanied him to the graveyard.[2]

Evazan's plans had already been set in motion, and his zombies were walking the streets. Fett and DV-9 made it to Zak's grave, and blasted him out of his coffin. Zak revealed that Evazan was hiding in the Crypt of the Ancients. DV-9 followed Fett and Zak to the crypt, but not before scooping up some boneworms, a primary ingredient in Evazan's formulas.[2]

In the crypt, they found Tash and Hoole being swarmed by zombies, including Kairn, with Evazan and Pylum controlling them. Fett opened fire on the zombies and made his way to the equipment table, where he quickly created a serum that would reverse the reanimation process. The formula was a success, but was quickly snatched by Kairn. Zak managed to appeal to Kairn's human side, and convinced him to destroy the zombies, including Evazan and, inadvertently, himself. DV-9 and Hoole created more serum, enough to stop the zombie invasion and save the planet.[2]

Plague on GobindiEdit

"Tending human children. I would rather herd a shipload of Gamorrean slime cats"
DV-9[src]

After leaving Necropolis, the group went to the planet Gobindi. Zak had recently fallen ill and Hoole wanted to have him examined by his friend, Doctor Kavafi, who worked at the Mah Dala Infirmary. After Zak was settled into the hospital, Hoole ordered Deevee to take Tash to explore the city. While passing over a bridge, the duo were attacked by a blob creature, but were saved by the timely intervention of Wedge Antilles. Antilles offered to give the two a tour, but DV-9 protested, only to be ignored by Tash. As they toured, Antilles revealed that he was unable to leave Gobindi, due to a blockade. DV-9 disputed that as they had arrived. Antilles replied that only Imperials could arrive or leave, which angered Tash. Suddenly, The capture of a pirate by Imperials distracted the three, but as the excitement died down, DV-9 and Tash realized that Antilles had gone. Examining a "wanted" poster, DV-9 and Tash realized that Antilles himself was a pirate. Shocked, the two returned to the infirmary, where Zak now floated in a bacta tank. Tash opted to stay at the hospital while Hoole returned to the Shroud along with DV-9. Hoole did not stay long and instructed DV-9 to tell Tash to wait for him on the ship until he returned again.

When Tash returned to the Shroud some time later, she found DV-9 working on the computers alone. DV-9 relayed Hoole's instructions, and left to check on Zak. Zak was released from the bacta tank into DV-9's care and they headed toward the ship. Upon arriving, DV-9 noted that Tash was there no longer. Zak found a trail of slime, which DV-9 identified as belonging to a blob creature. Believing that Tash may have been attacked by one, the two descend the ziggurats into the dense jungle.

Reaching the bottom, the two found themselves surrounded by blobs. As the blobs lunged forward, they were intercepted by Wedge Antilles and his rebel gang. As they fled to the ziggurats, looking for cover, DV-9 discovered a locked chamber where the Gobindi had locked up a deadly virus, as well as a cure to an infection.

Personality and traitsEdit

"Deevee! He saved my life!."
Tash Arranda[src]

DV-9 was a very intelligent droid, and was quite proud to have been looked up to by his peers. However, once he became a tutor to Tash and Zak, he would often grumble and complain about his position. To an outsider he seemed to resent the Arranda children, however that was not the case. He went out of his way to protect the children from numerous threats, such as saving them from Smada's fortress, rescuing Zak from being buried alive, and taking a blaster bolt meant for Tash.

Behind the scenesEdit

The Galaxy of Fear books continually switch the spelling for Deevee's name between "DV-9" and "D-V9," even within the same book. This article uses "DV-9" to better reflect the nickname"Deevee" and due to its being used in the most recent source. DV-9 resembles Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for C-3PO.
