[edit] Heteronormativity and Xenophobia in Star Wars
It often seems like you have to be on the receiving end of such things to bother with some reflection and fully recognize how nasty it gets, when you get to be the unconventional guy. When you're willing for things to change, I think the most you can do is to show yourself, especially when it is called for. Star Wars has been known to favor heterosexual white male human characters for major productions, but while things are changing, people still have trouble doing the same. I heard, for example, that a lot of parents were mad at LucasArts for the introduction of a non-heterosexual character in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game. I was very happy that Juhani made it to the final game without joining the cut content, and I am happy to see there are plenty other fans wishing for more homosexual characters in Star Wars. Issue 23 of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series of comics includes a letter of a fan who outright asked for that, among other things; a shame editor Jeremy Barlow did not answer on that little point.
[edit] Juhani
- "I only wish that we had had more time… together…"
- ―Juhani[src]
Juhani, the Cathar Jedi Guardian from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is possibly the first lesbian character of the Star Wars universe. Originally, she was supposed to play Bastila Shan, but then the clichéd good-looking white human heterosexual was created to take her place. Conversations with Juhani are by far the worst scripted in the game, with much content lost to faulty conditionals. Dialog files indicate she should have been able to comment on Dantooine, Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan and Korriban, like most of Revan's companions. After the quest for Korriban's Star Map, she could comment on Revan's choice for the final test of Naga Sadow's tomb, be it dark or light. There was also some more dialog on the Leviathan in which a female Revan romancing Juhani could reassure her that they would have had more time together. Regardless of that content, their romance is awfully marginalized, always kept between the lines, and full of dumb insulting options of refusal.

[edit] Dak Vesser
- "When he decided to leave the Order, he asked me to come with him. He… he said he loved me."
- ―Juhani[src]
Dak Vesser was a male human who fell in love with Juhani, a female Cathar. They joined the Jedi Order together and shared the same doubts about their place among the Jedi, but when Juhani scorned his romantic advances Dak left the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine and eventually joined the Sith. I really liked this, there was love interest, there was refusal, but no xenophobic crap.
[edit] Ladies of the Old Republic
I always did love strong female characters, and The Sith Lords has quite the collection. I liked Kreia a sight more than any other Star Wars character I have ever known, she reminds me of Milton's Satan, a light-bearer, bringer of truth, devoted to coercion and deceit and betrayal, waging war against the Force. I'm quite sure Brianna is her daughter, but I appreciated the mistery, I'm glad Kreia never confirmed it. The Echani girl sure has her same temper and attitude, contemptuous with most, but kind to the Jedi Exile. I believe when her character was created, they wanted her to be like a young Kreia, a fierce adherent of the Jedi Code who came to recognize its flaws, fell in love, and betrayed her oaths. Sometimes I feel The Sith Lords would have been better off with the Exile being male. Mira was also a nice character—a huntress, a Mandalorian, no less!
As for the comics, well, Jarael is nice, but I had hoped something happened between her and Alek—before he lost his hair—gee, was he handsome. Krynda Draay, although she may seem like a Kreia rip-off, is a powerful character. All by herself, she trained Jedi for thirty years without the supervision of the Jedi Council, and she has a rough temperament, I like the way she speaks to her core slime son Lucien. I never bought the theory, but some believe she is actually Kreia. I think she is going to die in Vindication, she won't live enough to be exiled. I also think Kreia has not made an appearance in the comics because this kind of speculation adds to the mystery, and is good for business. I am sure Kreia is Arren Kae, but whether we will ever be told… harder to tell.
