Jacen Wayland was a former Jedi who became a Dark Jedi and Emperor's Hand following the issuing of Order 66 and the execution of the Great Jedi Purge of 19 BBY. He was away from the Temple when Darth Vader led the 501st in their assault. Wayland was returning to Coruscant with his Master, and arrived while the attack was in progress, only to be ambushed by a squad of armed Clone Troopers. Wayland's Master was quickly gunned down, and he turned to the Dark Side for vengeance, cutting through the clones like a lightsaber slicing through the air. He would likely have fallen in a subsequent hunt, except that, rather than trying to escape, he stayed where he was in order to slowly torture the last few soldiers with Force Lightning, before choking them to death.
This viciousness brought him to the attention of Palpatine, the newly-proclaimed Galactic Emperor, who chose to accept the young man's service, training him in Dark Side abilities and later making him one of the first of his "Hands." Wayland was in fact one of the few to ever know that he was not the only agent serving in that role. During his training, he received a new lightsaber hilt, and was given 3 crystals to use in making it his own. In addition to a synth-crystal to create the crimson blade favored by Sith and Dark Jedi, Wayland received Opila and Stygium crystals, which enhanced the blade's cutting power, as well as increasing his stealth and dexterity.
During the Galactic Civil War, Wayland served his master as a spy and assassin, striking at both agents of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, as well as Imperial dignitaries who threatened his master in some way. His ultimate fate following the Battle of Endor is unknown, though he did survive, as he was not present for the death of Palpatine, and later took up the title of Dark Lord of the Sith in his honor, calling himself Darth Venge. Jacen Wayland favored Form V: Shien/Djem So, as well as being adept at Force Rage, Force Choke, Force Cloak, Force Concealment, and Force Crush. For personal transportation, he preferred a refit, jet-black Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor, called the Stalker. The vehicle had an improved cloaking device, and its speed and stealth facilitated Wayland's missions against his master's enemies, Rebel, Imperial, or otherwise. While Wayland's astromech droid could store hyperdrive jump coordinates, he preferred to use his connection to the Force to plan a safe path across the Galaxy.
