Kev-La Ttolya was a Droffatsi human Jedi Master during the Clone Wars, and learnt the ways of the Force from his Master, the noted Healer and diplomat Nil Nemenon. Unlike most Jedi, who were taken from their homeworlds by the Jedi, Kev-La ran away from his homeworld Droffats and from his tyrannical father, Ssor Ttolya, and made his way to Coruscant hoping to join the Jedi. Upon arrival at the Jedi Temple, it seemed Kev-La's hopes would be dashed. Yoda was adamant that he was too old to become a Padawan, and he was sent away. However, while he was leaving the Temple for a life of poverty in the Coruscant Underworld, the twelve year old boy impressed Nil with his calm acceptance of this disappointing destiny. Nil followed him, and watched as he was attacked by a gang of bandits. Ready to come to his aid if necessary, Nil was instead able to observe the natural aptitude for the Force, and unfaltering compassion, displayed by Kev-La Ttolya. Revealing herself, Nil took Kev-La back to the Temple and resubmitted him for consideration by the Jedi Council, who this time accepted the young runaway and welcomed him to his new home.

When the Council sends Obi-Wan on a mission without him, Anakin soon grows bored with studying and instead enjoys training with his new-found sparring partner, Master Nejaa Halcyon. Anakin is anxious to take his Trials and win knighthood, and asks Halcyon to put a good word in for him. Unfortunately, since he allowed his ship to be stolen on an earlier mission, Nejaa thinks it doubtful the Council will listen to his advice.

In the Intergalactic Communications Center on the planet Praesitlyn, the facility's chief administrator, Reija Momen, fretfully waits in vain for a message from General Khamar. His Praesitlyn Defense Force is investigating the reported landing of a Separatist droid invasion force. Just then, attacking troops land on a nearby mesa and Momen realises she has little choice but to order her staff to begin destroying equipment lest the Communications Center, which is vital to the Republic war effort, should fall into enemy hands.

Aboard his flagship Corpulentus, in orbit above Praesitlyn, Intergalactic Banking Clan Admiral Pors Tonith is confronted by a hologram of Commander Asajj Ventress, demanding a status report on behalf of Count Dooku. He assures her that Operation Case White will be a resounding success: His feint will draw away the defenders, allowing his main force to then land and capture the facility easily.

Having recovered her stranded squad leader Sergeant Maganinny from the maelstrom of the invasion landing, reconnaissance trooper Odie Subu is commended and then tasked by General Khamar with helping to prepare for the main droid army he has guessed will soon land between them and the Center. After completing this task, Subu is on her way back to base when she chances to find a downed T-19 starfighter pilot, Lieutenant Erk H'Arman. He was among the first to engage the enemy but was shot down and forced to crashland. Before he can return to base with Odie aboard her speeder bike, however, the pair are caught in a sudden dust storm.

Tonith's droids easily overcome the Center's remaining defenders and the Muun admiral surveys his new prize personally. His gloating is momentarily halted when an outraged and disgusted Reija slaps his gaunt face, but with herself and her beloved co-workers held at blasterpoint, the plucky administrator has little choice but to kerb her resistance immediately.

Odie and Erk have found some caves in which to take shelter and replenish their dwindling water supplies.
