User:LtNOWIS/Great LucasCruft Purge

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

Jump to: navigation, search

The Great LucasCruft Purge is the informal name given to a series of AfDs (then called VfDs) targeting Star Wars-related articles with little importance on Wikipedia. The purge was initiated in March 2005 by a Wikipedian by the name of GRider (considered by some a deletionist who wished to prove a point). The purge garnered the Star Wars Wiki a great deal of public attention, which gave many the erroneous impression that Wookieepedia was created because of the purge.

The term "Great LucasCruft Purge" stemmed from the VfD for Great Jedi Purge and was co-coined by Riffsyphon1024 and Kappa.

Ironically, I suppose, this page itself was voted to be deleted in May 2007. I wanted to preserve the article's history, so I undeleted it. This paragraph and the following two are new; the rest is how the article historically was.

This page is fairly out of date. While we once were angered by Wikipedia's deletion of these articles, they now target such subjects as the Confederacy of Independent Systems and Jaina Solo. Should we be outraged by this? Not necessarily. I tried finding "reliable third party sources" for Jaina Solo, and there wasn't much online. My vote to keep was marginal, in light of that fact. Wikipedia can have good Star Wars articles; their standards for articles are simply very different than ours. They must focus heavily on real world character origins, impacts, and so forth. It's in their rules.

However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be mad about this. Not for enforcing their rules, but for enforcing disproportionately on Star Wars articles. Other franchises simply are not held to the same standard. In 4 years nobody has ever thought to question the structure or existence of Belecthor II on Wikipedia. Or Morwen Steelsheen, or the Doom of Mandos. Someone thought to tag Eru Ilúvatar with an "Unreferenced" tag, but it's allowed to hang around for 18 months without sources. Alias was a great show, but do we really need the article on the infant daughter that was born in the last half of the abbreviated fifth season? And the annoying thing is, that they don't get targeted in part because they're lower profile, because they have less information to cover. Nobody really needs to look up anything about Alias characters, because it's all pretty well self-contained. In fairness, they've also cracked down on Star Trek. And to a more limited degree, on Lord of the Rings. You can see more whining about Wikipedia on the QDB

This section is out of date and should be updated. Also, I should provide dates. And make a table. Those are fun.
