Biography

Early life
Edit
Ona Nobis was a female Sorrusian bounty hunter who gained a reputation by committing multiple for-hire murders, including some in which the victims were in the high levels of finance or government.[4]
Attempting to capture Didi Oddo
Edit
- "Your father may have a piece of information that is valuable to someone. That someone has sent a bounty hunter after him. We're assuming they want the information back at any cost."
- ―Qui-Gon Jinn to Astri Oddo
In 43 BBY, Nobis was hired by scientist Jenna Zan Arbor to retrieve Zan Arbor's stolen datapad.[source?] She determined that the thief, Fligh, had given the datapad to his friend Didi Oddo, an information broker and owner of Didi's Café on Coruscant, and she set out to capture Oddo. On her first attempt, she was able to wrap her whip around Oddo, but made the mistake of knocking off a bystander's visor. Wielding a vibroblade, the bystander gave chase, forcing her to abort the attempt. She escaped after giving the bystander a beating with her whip.[4]
Two days later, Nobis was at the Soft Landings Inn when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, visited her. Oddo—who believed that Nobis was acting on an official arrest warrant and had erroneously targeted the wrong person—had asked Jinn, a friend of his, to confront the bounty hunter and clear up the alleged case of mistaken identity. She opened the door for the two Jedi but ignored their request to check paperwork, not moving or saying anything. As Jinn continued to insist, Nobis suddenly struck with her whip, hitting Kenobi twice. Switching her whip to laser mode, she then attacked Jinn, cutting his forearm, before fleeing through a window.[4]
Later the same day at the Splendor Tavern, Nobis—disguised as an old man—played a game of sabacc against black marketeer Helb. Betting a house in the Cascardi Mountains on the planet Duneeden, she lost the game; Helb later gave the property to Oddo to pay off a gambling debt. Shortly afterward, Jinn and Kenobi arrived at the Splendor to follow up on a lead regarding why Oddo had been targeted. They spotted her, but she slipped out through a window. The two Jedi gave chase, but she successfully eluded them.[4]
That evening, Nobis—under the alias of Reesa On[1]—attended a party at Didi's Café held by Zan Arbor. After the other attendees left, Nobis attacked Didi[4] and his adopted daughter,[1] Astri Oddo and searched the building for the stolen datapad. However, the two Jedi, realizing that something was amiss, entered the building and caught her in the act. Realizing this, she immediately escaped out the window and fled. In an attempt to hide from the bounty hunter, the Oddos quickly left Coruscant for the property on Duneeden.[4]
Early that night, Nobis, disguised as a parking attendant, was at Zan Arbor's hotel when Jinn and Kenobi—who had learned of the stolen datapad—visited the scientist. When the Jedi exited the building and attempted to get into their speeder, Nobis hit it with another vehicle, sending Kenobi over the edge of the platform; Kenobi stopped his fall with his liquid-cable launcher. Nobis then took off in the Jedi's vehicle.[4]
Battle in the Cascardi Mountains

Springing the trap
Edit
- "She has lured them here. No wonder she remained on Coruscant and trailed us. She did not have to track Didi and Astri. She knew where they were."
- ―Qui-Gon Jinn, realizing that Nobis had led the Oddos into a trap
Soon afterward, Nobis left Coruscant and headed to the Oddos' hideout on Duneeden. Jinn and Kenobi, however, had learned of her prior ownership of the property and theorized that she had led them into a trap, and so they showed up to spirit the father and daughter away to a new hideout. After disabling both the Jedi's and the Oddos' ships, Nobis sprung the trap before they could get out of the house, locking all of them inside and covering all of the windows with sheets of durasteel. After Jinn powered down the lights, the bounty hunter attacked the Oddos out of the darkness. The Jedi intercepted the attacks, and Nobis kept the Jedi busy by continuing to attack the Oddos, forcing the Jedi to defend them and preventing them from mounting an attack of their own.[4]
The Jedi, however, continued to move forward, and Nobis soon realized that their objective was to get to the windows so that they could cut through the durasteel coverings with their lightsabers. In an attempt to halt their advance, she somersaulted forward and launched a kick at them. She landed a slight blow against Astri's ribs and heard the sound of her boot hitting something in Astri's pocket. She realized that this meant that Astri had the stolen datapad. Jinn, also realizing that she knew this, pushed Astri behind him to protect her and launched an attack at the bounty hunter, to which Nobis responded with a series of backflips to evade the attack.[4]
When Nobis found her feet, she discovered that the Jedi and the Oddos had escaped up a ramp into the top floor of the house. Following, she found Kenobi beginning to cut through one of the durasteel window covers and Jinn rushing her to attack; the Oddos were nowhere in sight. Leaping over Jinn, she grabbed a pipe near the ceiling and swung, using her momentum to launch an attack against Kenobi, which he was barely able to defend himself against. The two Jedi then went on the attack, driving Nobis back toward the ramp. When she had been pushed all the way back to the ramp, Kenobi duplicated her move, jumping up to a pipe then launching into her feet-first. Nobis was sent flying down the ramp and was knocked out when her head hit the wall.[4]
Showdown on the mountain
Edit
- "She's going to come at Didi and Astri from below. She'll be between them and the transport."
"Exactly. We must reach them first." - ―Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn
When she woke up, she found that the Jedi had cut through one of the window covers and escaped out the window. She leaped out the window onto the landing platform below and attacked the Jedi. As Jinn parried the attack, Kenobi spotted Nobis's ship further down the mountain and sent the Oddos towards it. Nobis soon pushed the Jedi off the platform into the snow below. She then pushed a button on her utility belt, which caused a makeshift sled to form around her. Jumping off of the platform, she slid down the snowy mountain on her back, using spikes on her boots to control her speed.[4]
Once she was below the Oddos, Nobis stopped her descent by wrapping her whip around a boulder. Removing the improvised sled from her back, she began moving toward the Oddos. Meanwhile, the Jedi had realized her tactic and were also moving toward the Oddos, but from the opposite direction. Although the Jedi were closer, Nobis launched her whip at Astri, capturing her before the Jedi could get to her. As she began to drag the young girl toward her, she pulled a blaster from her holster and shot Didi[4] with a tainted bolt designed to trigger an infection.[1]
When Nobis had pulled Astri within reach, she planted her foot on Astri's chest and reached down to grab the datapad, which Astri held tightly. She switched her whip to laser mode, to which Kenobi—who had been tending to Didi—responded with a Force-assisted leap down the mountain. The Padawan flew straight into Nobis, hitting her shoulders with both of his feet, knocking her backward and causing her to fall down. She then flicked a vibroblade toward Astri; Kenobi tried to stop her with his lightsaber but only managed to touch her fingers,[4] causing two of her fingers to fuse together.[1] At the same time, the young Jedi leaped backward and grabbed the weapon out of the air before it could reach Astri.[4]
At that point, Nobis knew she had been defeated. She launched a line, which attached to her cruiser and pulled her toward it. Jinn, who had been chasing her down the mountain the entire time, raced toward her. As she entered her ship, the elder Jedi leaped onto the boarding ramp, only to be caught by surprise when Nobis fired her blaster, hitting him in the chest. With the Jedi Master as her captive, she lifted off.[4]

Behind the scenes
Edit
Ona Nobis made her first appearance in December 2000 as the unnamed title character and main antagonist of Jedi Apprentice: The Deadly Hunter by Jude Watson, the eleventh book in the young readers Jedi Apprentice series and the first in an informal trilogy dealing with Nobis and Jenna Zan Arbor. In February 2001, she appeared again in the next book in the series, Jedi Apprentice: The Evil Experiment, in which she was named for the first time, though her role was reduced to that of a supporting character. Two months later, she received her final in-universe appearance in the last book of the trilogy, Jedi Apprentice: The Dangerous Rescue; again, Nobis received only a supporting role in this book.
The Dangerous Rescue depicted the battle which ended with her death and suggested that she was in fact dead, but it stopped short of actually stating that she had died. As a result, her death was unconfirmed until the publication of The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia in December 2008. Nobis's entry in the compendium explicitly stated that she had been "killed" in the fight, thus confirming her death for the first time.
Inconsistencies
Edit
- The Deadly Hunter indicates that Nobis's hand injury was to her right hand, but The Evil Experiment states that it was her left hand that had been injured.
