General Vernan was Chief of Intelligence for the Alliance to Restore the Republic early in the Galactic Civil War.
Vernan became the first Chief of Alliance Intelligence, a branch responsible for obtaining and analyzing military, diplomatic, and economic information, reporting the information to the revalant branches of the Alliance. As Chief of Intelligence, General Vernan had to oversee mainly Intentions, Operations, and Counter-Intelligence branches, including different departments like Cryptology, Interrogation, and Equipment; Systems Ops, Passive Ops, and Coordinate; and Security and Retrieval, respectively. Through the organization's many operatives, analysts and personnel, information was channeled up to Senior Intelligence Officers, who presented the Chief with daily briefs on the most crucial topics. The Chief in turn reported to the Commander-in-Chief and Supreme Commanders, and advised them in their strategic planning.
General Vernan prepared a report accurately predicting that the Oplovis Fleet would attempt to put down a revolt on Mantooine in Atrivis sector. This report was based on information acquired by a "semi-demented" intelligence agent named Troomis that was analyzed by Captain Ioth. Further analysis by Commander Zgorth'sth from Intentions division provided the first inkling that Oplovis Fleet was about to act, and a surveillance droid confirmed that the fleet was on the move. Vernan sent Fleet Intelligence word, and Admiral Ackbar led a battle line of three Alliance cruisers into the Atrivis system, ambushing and defeating the Oplovis fleet.
Later during the war, Vernan became the commanding officer of special agent teams commander Dutra Zeneta. A survivor of the Wellte-ir Massacre, Zeneta was considered suicidal by Alliance Command. However, when Zeneta requested permission to use Shroud Team as a foster agent group, Vernan trusted Zeneta and agreed with his request.
General Vernan was killed in action, under classified circumstances, shortly before the Battle of Hoth. Mon Mothma replaced him as Chief of Alliance Intelligence with General Airen Cracken.
