Colonel Vindoo Barvel, also known as The Shooter, was one of the Imperial Navy's most decorated TIE pilots. During the Clone Wars, he had tcredited with more than thirty confirmed kills in ship-to-ship combat, although it was thought that the actual number was twice that given that he often didn't bother to report a number of victories. Barvel was cycled out of active duty so that the Empire had a live hero to parade around as a recruiter. Although only a captain at the time, he was placed in charge of the pilot school at the Imperial City Naval Base.
Barvel once dueled with Darth Vader in a training display for pilots who were about to graduate from the academy. During the maneuvers, Vader had shown up and requested a TIE fighter to join in the mock battle. He quickly eliminated half a dozen ships until it was down to Vader and Barvel. Vader easily out-flew the ace and after playing with him for a time, tagged him with the fighter's training beams, much to the astonishment of the participating trainees, who held Barvel in such high regard. Later it was revealed that Vader had had his targeting computer disabled.
