The Emperor's Voice, formally addressed as the Voice of the Emperor by other Sith, was a position within the reconstituted Sith Empire that was held by the Sith Emperor's current host body. First created after a failed assassination attempt in 3,950 BBY, the Voice allowed the Emperor to protect his true body while still delivering commands to his servants and carrying out his will. The Emperor utilized many Voices of different species, genders, and ages throughout his lifetime, transferring his consciousness and powers from body to body as his hosts succumbed to the ravaging effects of the dark side.

As war began to ignite again between the Empire and the Galactic Republic in 3,642 BBY, the Dark Councilor Darth Baras began a coup years in the making as he attempted to take the place of the Voice and thereby become the supreme authority within the Empire. Trapping the true Voice on the planet of Voss with the aid of the dark entity Sel-Makor, Baras secured his power base and proclaimed himself to be the Voice of the Emperor before the Dark Council. However, Baras' former apprentice and the newly-appointed Emperor's Wrath killed the true Voice in order to free the Emperor's essence and struck down Baras for his transgression. The Emperor's next Voice would fall in battle with the prodigal Jedi Knight known as the Hero of Tython, forcing the Emperor's essence back into his true body and abolishing the post of Emperor's Voice while his essence healed.

Role and powersEdit

The position of Emperor's Voice was more than a simple title—through Sith magic and the long-lost technique of transfer essence, the Sith Emperor transferred his consciousness and life force into a host body,^[6] leaving his Sith pureblood body safe in a state of deep slumber.^[5] The host's mind was completely suppressed, crushed beneath the weight of the Emperor's mind, and their body literally became the Sith's own. The process also conferred the Emperor's immense strength in the Force upon the Voice,^[6] though his abilities could be bolstered by the host's own powers—the Emperor utilized a Voss Mystic as his Voice during the Cold War in order to take advantage of the Voss' prophetic abilities.^[10]

When the host Voice died,^[10] typically from the side-effects of the Emperor's immense strength in the dark side,^[11] the Emperor's essence was released from the body and returned to the care of his Hand—the twelve Servants who carried out their master's will across the galaxy. Servant Two, a member of the Emperor's Hand, was mentally linked to the Emperor more so than all of his other agents, and as a result, the prophetic Servant was always aware of the Voice's presence and location even when the Emperor was dormant. Upon receiving their master's essence, the Hand would procure a new Voice for the Emperor and aid him in establishing control of the host body.^[10]

HistoryEdit

The Emperor created his first Voice around 3,950 BBY,^[2] after a failed attack by the Jedi Master Revan and his allies brought the Emperor's body within arms' reach of harm.^[3] The Emperor took Revan captive and imprisoned him, but the Emperor—who feared only death—was terrified by the close brush with death. As a result, the Empire's supreme ruler delved into further studies of the dark side in order to preserve his physical form^[2]—a body that had been rendered ageless but not invulnerable by the dark ritual the Emperor had performed over a thousand years earlier.^[3] Discovering how to transfer his consciousness and powers into the bodies of others, he took his first host and named the individual the Voice of the Emperor^[2]—the literal embodiment of the Emperor's absolute will and his mouthpiece to the Dark Council.^[6]

The Dark Council soon learned that the various individuals who would appear throughout the next three centuries were in fact the Emperor's host bodies, and therefore obeyed the Voice's commands the same as they would the Emperor himself.^[6] The Emperor's own body remained safe from harm in a deep sleep,^[5] while his consciousness reached out from his Voice across the galaxy to direct his agents and observe his enemies. Among the beings that the Emperor used were a young female Human and an elderly Sith pureblood,^[6] and during the early years of the Great Galactic War with the Galactic Republic, the position of Voice was filled by a male Human.^[7] Around 3,649 BBY,^[12] not long after the Treaty of Coruscant ended the war in 3,653 BBY,^[13] the planet of Voss was discovered by the Empire, and the Emperor was intrigued by the prophetic abilities of the native species. Therefore, he instigated an attack on the planet by Imperial forces while his Hand kidnapped a male Voss Mystic from the surface.^[10]

The Emperor would experiment with the Voss' powers over the next decade, using the abilities of his host^[8] and those of a captive Revan^[14] to gaze into the future as he made preparations to repeat on a galactic scale the ritual that had given him immortality.^[15] However, the Dark Councilor Darth Baras manipulated the Emperor throughout the Cold War, feeding him information on the mysterious dark side entity known as Sel-Makor that resided in the Sith complex called the Dark Heart on Voss.^[8] Finally, in 3,641 BBY,^[4] the Emperor decided to investigate Sel-Makor in the event that the entity could be useful to his ongoing plans.^[8]

However, when the Voice entered the Ancient Halls of the Dark Heart, the Emperor found that he could not leave—the Ancient Halls were a place that no Voss could ever exit, just as Baras had planned. Before the Emperor could reach out to his Hand and explain Baras' betrayal, Sel-Makor seized control of the Voice and began to battle the Emperor for control of both his host and the Sith's own powers in the Force.^[8] With the true Voice out of the way, Baras began his attempt to proclaim himself the Voice, betraying his apprentice in the process. However, acting on the fragments of instructions that the Emperor was able to send them during his struggle, the Hand appointed Baras' apprentice the newest Emperor's Wrath and unleashed the Sith Warrior upon Baras' allies. The Wrath eventually located the true Voice on Voss, and after defeating it in battle when Sel-Makor seized control of the body, the Wrath was ordered to kill the Voss host in order to free the Emperor's essence. With the death of his host, the Emperor's essence was able to return to his Hand and acquire a Human male as his new host.^[9]

This Voice would ultimately fall in battle with the Emperor's enemy, the Jedi Knight known as the Hero of Tython, when the Jedi confronted the Sith ruler in the depths of the Dark Temple on Dromund Kaas. Despite all of the Emperor's power, the Knight was still able to strike him down and kill the Voice, grievously wounding the Emperor's essence with the power of the light side.^[9] This forced the Emperor to return to his true body and driving him into a deep slumber from the shock of the blow.^[5] As a result, the Emperor failed to take a new Voice, suspending the position for the time being.^[16]

Behind the scenesEdit

The Emperor's Voice was first mentioned in the 2011 novel Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan by the Dark Councilor Darth Nyriss along with the Emperor's Hand and the Imperial Guard. However, the 2012 reference guide Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia directly contradicted this statement, as it established that the Emperor created his first Voice after Revan attacked the Emperor in 3,950 BBY, meaning that the position did not exist^[2] when Nyriss mentioned them to Lord Scourge in 3,954 BBY.^[3]

The position of Voice of the Emperor is a major plot point in Act III of the Sith Warrior class in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic, released by BioWare and LucasArts in 2011,^[8] where the Emperor is voiced by Doug Bradley.^[17] The player's master, Darth Baras, betrays his apprentice at the beginning of Act III as he attempts to proclaim himself Voice, and the Emperor's Hand appoints the player as the new Emperor's Wrath.^[1] After eliminating Baras' sister Darth Ekkage on Belsavis,^[18] the player searches for and finally locates the true Voice on Voss, which they must battle when Sel-Makor takes control of the body. After defeating Sel-Makor, the Wrath kills the Voice at the Emperor's command, freeing his essence and allowing him to take on a new Voice—the Human male that Jedi Knight players encounters in "Doomsday," their Act III finale.^[9]

The Emperor's Voice is ultimately killed by the Jedi Knight during their battle,^[9] though it is only revealed later in a message to the Emperor's Wrath that the Emperor's essence did in fact survive. Servant One of the Emperor's Hand explains to Sith Warrior players that the Emperor returned to his true body and entered into a deep slumber in order to heal from the damage inflicted by the Knight during their fight, thereby eliminating the need for a Voice at that time.^[5]
