"See? I'm flesh and blood, just like you."
―Waxer, to Numa — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

Waxer was the nickname of a clone trooper who served in Ghost Company, a unit of the Grand Army of the Republic's 212th Attack Battalion. During the Clone Wars, Waxer fought alongside Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker against the Separatist Droid Army, participating in the liberation of the planet Ryloth and its Twi'lek inhabitants. During the battle, Waxer and fellow trooper Boil found a young Twi'lek orphan named Numa in one of the city's alleys. Waxer took compassion on the girl and convinced Boil to take her with them as they traveled through the city in order to protect her from harm.

Waxer's kindness toward Numa proved advantageous for the Republic forces, as the girl showed them secret underground passages through the city. The passages allowed Ghost Company to succeed in their mission to destroy Confederate proton cannons that were preventing a Republic landing. After the successful liberation of Ryloth, Waxer participated in the Second Battle of Geonosis, where he and Boil assisted the Republic in shutting down major Separatist battle droid foundries and at one point rescued Kenobi, whose landing gunship had been shot down by Geonosian forces.

Later in the war, alongside the 212th, Waxer participated in a Republic campaign to retake Umbara, where he assisted General Kenobi in capturing the planet's capital city. Waxer led a platoon of 212th troopers to the site of a supposed upcoming attack by the native Umbarans, having been warned by General Pong Krell of the 501st Legion that that the enemy would be wearing captured clone trooper armor. Waxer's men indeed engaged enemy forces in clone armor, only to discover them to have been fellow 501st troopers; the two squads had been pitted against each other by Krell, who was planning to join the Separatists and sought to thwart the Republic's progress in the battle. Although Krell's ruse was exposed before the two clone detachments fully destroyed each other, Waxer himself was killed during the firefight.

Biography[]

Early life[]

A Human clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett,[3] the clone trooper nicknamed "Waxer" was born on the planet Kamino[1] to fight in the Grand Army of the Republic.[3] During the Clone Wars, the conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Waxer served under Clone Commander CC-2224—nicknamed "Cody"—in Ghost Company, a unit of the Grand Army of the Republic's 212th Attack Battalion. While serving in that unit, Waxer became best friends with a fellow trooper named Boil.[5]

In 22 BBY,[6] after Techno Union Foreman Wat Tambor took control of the planet Ryloth and subjugated its Twi'lek inhabitants, the Republic mounted an offensive to liberate the Twi'leks. Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, were able to destroy the Separatist blockade surrounding the planet, allowing the Republic forces to land and initiate a ground assault.[7] Alongside Jedi Master[4] and High Jedi General[8] Obi-Wan Kenobi, Cody, Boil, and the rest of Ghost Company, Waxer boarded an LAAT/i gunship[4]—the Crumb Bomber[9]—which set off for the city of Nabat.[4]

Aboard the gunship, Kenobi and Cody instructed Ghost Company to utilize their blasters and EMP grenades only, in order to avoid destroying the Twi'leks' home during their attempt to free them. Meanwhile, Separatist J-1 semi-autonomous proton cannons below began to harass the Republic Acclamator-class assault ships, forcing them to pull back. Aboard one of the transports, Jedi Master Mace Windu used a holoprojector to contact Kenobi and tasked him and Ghost Company with destroying the cannons to allow the rest of the Republic troops to land. After reaching the planet's surface, the Republic forces were confronted by a group of B1-Series battle droids in a bunker on the outskirts of Nabat. Kenobi led Waxer and Boil closer to the bunker in order to use EMP grenades and disable the droids.[4]

After Waxer's first attempt to lob a grenade into the bunker failed due to the long distance,[10] Kenobi used the Force to guide Waxer's and Boil's grenades and helped them reach their target. With the bunker neutralized, Ghost Company entered the city. Kenobi then told Cody to pick his best men and scout ahead. Following Kenobi's orders, Cody selected Waxer, Boil, and a trooper named Wooley. While scouting, the clones took notice that the city was deserted; the Twi'leks had been driven from their homes by the Confederate forces. Cody suggested that the group should split up and ordered Waxer and Boil to go south—telling them to return by an appointed time—while he and Wooley checked a courtyard.[4]

Meeting Numa[]

"We should do something. I say we take her with us."
―Waxer, to Boil, concerning Numa — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

Separated from Cody, Waxer and Boil stumbled upon the young female Twi'lek orphan Numa[9] in an alley. Waxer wanted to take her with them, but Boil insisted that she would only slow them down. As the two started to argue, Waxer spotted a Separatist recon droid flying nearby. By hiding in the alley, the clones managed to remain undetected by the droid, but its appearance prompted Boil to hurry Waxer. The latter continued to insist on taking Numa with them and soon convinced Boil to do so. As Boil reached to Numa, however, she bit his finger, leading Waxer to believe that she must have mistaken the two for droids.[4]

Waxer Numa

Waxer comforts Numa.

To ease the girl's fears, Waxer removed his helmet and tried to explain to Numa that he and Boil were living beings, just like her. Noticing that Numa looked starved, Boil and Waxer gave her a ration bar. After tasting the bar, the girl called the clones "nerra," a Twi'leki word unknown to Waxer and Boil. The clones then returned to their scouting mission, and Numa followed them. Soon, however, Numa ran away in the direction of the recon droid, and Waxer, unwilling to let her be killed by the droids, decided to follow her, much to Boil's dismay. The girl led the two clones to her destroyed home,[4] where Waxer noticed a tooka doll[9] lying on the floor. After he gave the doll to Numa, she began to cry, and the two clones comforted her.[4]

The two troopers received an incoming transmission from Cody and realized that they were late. Boil wanted to answer the transmission, but Waxer stopped him and asked how they would explain their delay to the commander. Waxer then told Boil that it would be better if they hurried back to the Republic position and claimed that they had ran into trouble, lying that their communications had been jammed as further cover. Before the clones could get very far, however, several gutkurrspredatory beasts released by the Separatists to fight the Republic forces—attacked them, and they were forced to retreat with Numa back into the home.[4]

Liberating the Twi'leks[]

Numa leads Waxer and Boil

Numa helped Waxer and Boil reach their unit.

To escape the creatures, Numa led the clones into an underground passage, and they resurfaced near Kenobi, Cody, and the rest of Ghost Company, who had just fought off a number of gutkurrs themselves. Conversing to Numa in Twi'leki, Kenobi discovered that she could lead them through secret passages to the Twi'lek prisoners, who were trapped at the courtyard near the proton cannons. While Cody and the rest of his company created a diversion to distract the droids, Waxer and Boil went with Kenobi to free the hostages.[4]

The three were successful in their mission and liberated the Twi'leks, who then took cover in the secret passage. There, Numa was reunited with her uncle,[4] Nilim Bril.[9] Kenobi then took control of one of the proton cannons and with the help of Waxer and Boil—who loaded the cannon with shells—managed to destroy the other cannons. However, a shot from Separatist T-series tactical droid commander TX-20's Armored Assault Tank destroyed the commandeered cannon and blasted the three aside.[4]

Numa, worried for her new friends, ran from her cover to the clones, and after they had recovered, she ran over to Kenobi. TX-20's tank targeted Numa and Kenobi, but the now-freed Twi'leks attacked the tactical droid and destroyed him. Mace Windu and the transports were then able to land. As the Republic forces prepared to head to the capital city of Lessu to retake it and free the planet, Waxer and Boil said goodbye to Numa and bid her well. Numa then called them "nerra" one last time, and Kenobi translated for them: "nerra" meant "brother."[4] Eventually, the Republic was able to liberate Ryloth and destroy all of the droid forces.[11][12]

Geonosis[]

"Why do we always get the fun missions?"
"Oh, this isn't the fun part. Getting back to the square is the fun part."
―Waxer and Boil — (audio) Listen (file info)[13]

Later in the war, the Geonosian population of the planet Geonosis—the site of the first battle of the war—rebelled against the Republic and began producing droids for the Confederacy in newly established droid foundries. Upon discovering that fact, the Republic launched an assault on the planet in the hopes of capturing the Geonosian leader, Archduke Poggle the Lesser, and destroying the newly ray-shielded foundries.[13]

The Republic forces were divided into three groups, led by Jedi Generals Kenobi, Skywalker, and Ki-Adi-Mundi, and set off in LAAT/i gunships to a rendezvous point, where they were to regroup for the assault on the shield generator. Waxer and Boil accompanied the strike team led by Kenobi and Commander Cody, and the assault force soon managed to reach the rendezvous point despite heavy fire from the Geonosians. Upon landing, Cody circled his All Terrain Tactical Enforcer walkers into a defensive formation, and the clone troopers engaged the enemy Geonosians. However, it was soon discovered that during the landing procedure, Kenobi's gunship[13]—the Bad Kitty—had been shot down and crashed five kilometers away from his forces' position.[14]

Hoping to rescue the general, Cody called Waxer and Boil and ordered them to reach Kenobi's gunship and check it for survivors. The two troopers raced through the ongoing firefight to the downed vehicle and opened the gunship. Inside it, they found two survivors: the injured Kenobi and clone trooper Trapper. Under covering fire from the Republic's AT-TE walkers, Waxer and Boil escorted the wounded pair back to Cody's position, where Waxer stayed with Obi-Wan as the commander briefed the situation. Later, Skywalker's and Mundi's troops—along with several BTL-B Y-wing starfighters dispatched by Admiral Wullf Yularen—arrived to assist Kenobi's men. Waxer remained by his general's side as he explained the plan to destroy the shield generator, which was successful.[13] At some point during the battle, the Republic forces targeted one of the Geonosian weapons factories for destruction. Waxer was then dispatched to scout ahead and gather information about the enemy. He ran into a group of battle droids but was able to take them down before they revealed his position.[15]

Umbara[]

"Tell me who gave you the orders to attack us."
[gasping] "It… It was General Krell." [coughing] "He sent us to these coordinates to stop the enemy. We thought they were wearing our armor, but it was…you."
―CT-7567 and the dying Waxer — (audio) Listen (file info)[16]

By late 21 BBY,[2] Waxer had achieved the rank of clone trooper lieutenant.[17] That year, the native population of the planet Umbara seceded from the Republic and pledged their support to the Confederacy,[18] prompting the Galactic Republic to launch an offensive to retake the strategically located planet. As the Republic forces, led by Generals Skywalker, Kenobi, Saesee Tiin, and Pong Krell, closed in on the world, Waxer attended the pre-battle briefing held among the command staff aboard an Acclamator-class transport. Waxer and the 212th Attack Battalion, under the command of Kenobi, was tasked with capturing the planet's capital city, while the rest of the troops provided support for that main assault.[19] As the lengthy battle dragged on, the 212th received a message from General Krell, who had assumed command of the 501st Legion of clone troopers after Skywalker was recalled from Umbara. Krell warned the 212th that the Umbarans, wearing captured clone trooper armor, were planning an attack.[16]

WaxersLastMoments-CoK

Waxer shedding a tear, upon realizing that he killed his own brothers

Waxer then led a platoon of the 212th's men to the coordinates provided by Krell, where they indeed encountered a group of attackers in clone armor. Heavy fighting erupted between the two groups, during which many troops on both sides were killed and Waxer himself was fatally wounded. However, Waxer's men soon discovered that they were killing their own brethren from the 501st when one of the opposing soldiers—Captain CT-7567, nicknamed "Rex"—took off his helmet and ran out to the middle of the battlefield in a desperate attempt to stop the fight.[16]

The 501st, via a fake transmission from Waxer engineered by Krell—who had fallen to the dark side of the Force and intended to join Count Dooku of the Separatists—had been guided to the same location and had similarly been warned about a disguised enemy. Pitting the two clone detachments against each other was another step in Krell's plan to ensure the Republic's defeat on Umbara. After Rex successfully broke the battle, he walked to the dying Waxer's side, who informed him about Krell's treachery. With a shocking realization that he had just killed several of his clone brothers, Waxer drew his final breath and died.[16]

Personality and traits[]

"Oh, you made a friend. Mission accomplished."
―Boil, to Waxer, regarding Numa — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]
Waxer and Boil comfort Numa

Waxer found place for compassion amid the horrors of the war.

During his mission on Ryloth, Waxer was eager for combat.[20] Although he had been hardened by the Clone Wars,[21] Waxer was nevertheless a very compassionate soldier, showing considerable concern about Numa's well-being and an amiable manner toward her. Although he and Boil were the best of friends,[5] Waxer was often rather annoyed at Boil, who initially did not care for Numa or Ryloth's locals. Waxer also showed a fair amount of disobedience by deliberately deciding not to answer a call from command and planning on lying to his superior about running into trouble and having his communications jammed. According to Kenobi, it was uncharacteristic for Waxer and Boil to be late.[4] During the Second Battle of Geonosis, Waxer was sarcastic regarding his and Boil's assignment to rescue Kenobi, complaining that they always got the "fun" missions.[13] When Waxer discovered that he had killed other clones on Umbara, he was deeply affected by it, shedding a single tear before he died.[16]

As a clone of Jango Fett, Waxer stood at a height of 1.83 meters.[3] The trooper had light skin, and his eyes were brown in color.[4] Waxer had his hair shaved clean for quicker grooming, but had brown eyebrows and a soul patch beard. He enjoyed teasing Boil about his "fancy" mustache,[1] who believed himself to be the tougher of the pair.[5]

Skills and abilities[]

"I guess we're the best."
―Boil, on himself and Waxer — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

Trained in combat, reconnaissance, and military tactics,[1] Waxer was a veteran of several major battles of the Clone Wars, including the Battle of Ryloth and the Second Battle of Geonosis.[5] By the time of the latter battle, Waxer had joined the ranks of Advanced Recon Force troopers, a specialized branch of clone troopers focused on reconnaissance.[1] Proficient with a variety of weapons,[15][20] Waxer dispatched a large number of Confederate droids throughout his military career,[22] and he had achieved the rank of lieutenant by the time of the Battle of Umbara[17] and commanded a platoon of troopers.[16]

Equipment[]

Waxer armor

Waxer in his customized kill-marked helmet on Ryloth

During his mission to Ryloth, Waxer wore standard Phase I clone trooper armor with Ghost Company's orange markings painted on it.[1] By that time, Waxer's helmet was adorned with twenty-one tally marks—eight on the right side and thirteen on the left, along with a drawing of a B1-Series battle droid, reflecting the number of droids he had destroyed.[4] On Geonosis, Waxer sported ARF trooper gear, also decorated with his unit's colors.[13] Both on Ryloth[4] and on Geonosis, he made use of a DC-15S blaster carbine.[13]

His equipment also included a pair of DC-17 hand blasters[20] and a Z-6 rotary blaster cannon featuring a built-in missile launcher.[15] By the time of the battle on Umbara, Waxer had switched to Phase II clone trooper armor,[16] and he continued to keep count of the destroyed battle droids on his helmet and shoulder pad, which now totaled eighty. Waxer also added a cartoon illustration of Numa to his helmet in honor of the Twi'lek girl.[22]

Behind the scenes[]

Character development[]

"That was our first tear [on Star Wars: The Clone Wars]."
"That's right. The first time we ever had a character cry. Not just look like they're about to cry, but actually, physically cry, with one tear. And that was all Joel [Aron]."
―Animation supervisor Keith Kellogg and supervising director Dave Filoni discussing the scene of Waxer's death — (audio) Listen (file info)[23]

Waxer was created for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series and first appeared in The Clone Wars 1, a comic book written by Henry Gilroy and illustrated by Scott Hepburn[24] and published on September 10, 2008 as a tie-in to the series.[25] Waxer then made an appearance in the twentieth episode of the series' first season, titled "Innocents of Ryloth"[4] and which aired on March 6, 2009.[26] He continued to make appearances on the show until he was killed off in the series' fourth season episode "Carnage of Krell,"[16] which originally aired on November 18, 2011.[26] That episode featured a scene of Waxer crying, being the first character to do so on the show.[23]

Like all clones in the show, Waxer was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.[9] Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season One, the DVD and Blu-ray release of the television series' first season,[10] which was released on November 9, 2009,[27] featured an extended, "Director's Cut," version of "Innocents of Ryloth." Compared to the original version, it included several new scenes. One scene featured Waxer as he tried to throw a grenade into the droid bunker and missed the target, explaining why Kenobi had to use the Force to guide the subsequent grenades in the aired cut of the episode.[10]

Inconsistencies[]

Slaves of the Republic adaptation[]

"Sir, we're still mopping up clankers here and there, but we've secured the city's north quadrant."
―Waxer reports to Obi-Wan Kenobi during the battle at Kiros in The Clone Wars comic series[24]
Waxer

Waxer's appearance on Kiros in The Clone Wars comic series

The fourth season of the television series also saw the Slaves of the Republic story arc of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars comic series adapted to the screen.[28] However, as Waxer had just died in the previous episode,[16] his role during the Battle of Kiros[24] was filled by Boil in the episode "Kidnapped,"[28] which aired on November 25, 2011.[26] The television series is therefore given canonical precedence, and this article assumes that Boil participated in the Battle of Kiros instead of Waxer.

In the comic series, Waxer is featured among the Republic troops dispatched to liberate the Togrutan colony world of Kiros, which has been occupied by the Separatists. Led by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano, the Republic forces quickly secure the northern quadrant of Kiros's capital and reach the headquarters of the Separatist commander, Xerius Ugg. As Commander Cody and the rest of Ghost Company approach from the south through minimal resistance, Waxer reports to General Kenobi on the progress of the battle. The battle is ultimately won by the Republic.[24]

Innocents of Ryloth adaptations[]

Waxer was featured in the 2009 young-readers book The Battle for Ryloth, which adapted "Innocents of Ryloth" but featured several inconsistencies with the episode. In the book, both Waxer and Boil initially hesitate to take Numa with them but ultimately decide to do so and then take her straight to Kenobi, skipping the gutkurr chase entirely.[29]

A much more glaring inconsistency is presented in the Nintendo DS edition of the 2009 video game Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, which features Waxer as a playable character during the events of "Innocents of Ryloth" but shows an entirely different version of events compared to the TV series.[30] In Republic Heroes, Waxer teams up with Ahsoka Tano to destroy the proton cannons. The two advance through the streets of one of Ryloth's settlements, fighting B1 battle droids and B2 super battle droids along the way and working together to activate switches and open doors.[30]

Just near the plaza where the proton cannons are located, Waxer and Tano are temporarily stopped by a shielded turret but manage to deactivate its shield by overloading the nearby power generators. After destroying the turret, Waxer and Tano find out that the entrance to the plaza is sealed. They contact General Kenobi—who, along with Commander Cody, is advancing from the other side of the town—and request his assistance. Kenobi soon arrives, helps Tano to open the gates, and the two Jedi successfully destroy the cannons.[30] This article assumes this portrayal of events to be non-canon.

Non-canon adaptations[]

Legowaxer

Waxer right after hitting a gutkurr on the head with a rocket launcher in LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

In 2011, Waxer was featured in the non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars as one of the playable characters in the level adapting "Innocents of Ryloth." While the Nintendo DS version closely follows the plot of "Innocents of Ryloth," other console versions of the game present a very different take on the events from the television episode. In those versions, Waxer and Boil's encounter with Numa was completely omitted. Instead, they accompany Kenobi and Cody throughout the whole mission, participating in the fight against the gutkurrs, with Waxer using a rocket launcher as his weapon.[31]

The game also features a series of "bounty hunter" missions, which involve the crime lord Ziro the Hutt sending a team of bounty hunters to capture important Republic figures, intending to receive a ransom for them. Waxer is one of the possible kidnapping targets and has to be captured by the player-character on Ryloth. During the mission, Waxer is situated above the player-character's position, firing at the bounty hunter while using a box as cover. The player-character has to destroy the supports underneath the box in order to make it and Waxer fall down to the ground, which completes the mission for the player.[31]
