"Tough hides. Naturally resistant to blaster fire. The Hutts like to use them as bodyguards and bounty hunters."
Luke Skywalker, on Weequay[10]

Weequays were a sentient species from the planet Sriluur common throughout the galaxy. Weequay possessed tough, leathery skin resistant to desert environments and blaster fire. Many Weequay were mercenaries, pirates, and bodyguards for the Hutt Clan. Notable Weequays included Hondo Ohnaka, who led the Ohnaka Gang, and the Jedi Sora Bulq.

Weequay were a sentient species native to the desert world of Sriluur.[2] Weequays were common throughout the galaxy.[11] Evolving under merciless conditions, their tough, leathery skin helped them endure the harsh environment of their homeworld[2] as well as providing natural resistance to blaster fire. This made Weequays ideal bodyguards and bounty hunters.[10] Some Weequay grew horns on their lower jaw,[4] while others had bumpy extensions of their skin.[1] Weequays often kept their hair long.[11] Weequays possessed the ability to communicate with other nearby Weequays through pheromones that were undetectable to non-Weequays.[12] Weequays could also be Force-sensitive.[13]

History[]

Many Weequays were involved in a series of wars against the Houk species.[14] Many Weequays served the Hutt Clan as mercenaries, bodyguards, and slaves since the Hutts controlled their homeworld.[15] Some were able to escape those hardships and sought out the Alliance to Restore the Republic and used their skill to bring some good to the galaxy.[16]

During the Clone Wars, Hondo Ohnaka and his Ohnaka Gang became involved in several conflicts with both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[4] The pirate gang operated out of Florrum but were extirpated by Separatist forces led by General Grievous.[17] Ohnaka and his remaining pirates would work out of the ruins of the base afterward. When a portion of Ohnaka's pirates swore themselves to the ex-Sith Lord Maul sometime later, Ohnaka and his loyalist faction defended their ruined base until the gang reunified.[18] During the Imperial Era, the gang would be dissolved[19] but later resurface under the leadership of Captain Skragg.[20]

During the New Republic Era, a Weequay pirate named Drell was part of the Warbird gang. Drell and the rest of the gang worked for the First Order until they were betrayed,[21] to which the gang responded to by later working with the Resistance.[22]

During the High Republic Era, one of the Tempest Runners of the Nihil was the Weequay male Kassav Milliko who served the Nihil until his death at the Battle of Kur.[23]

The pirate Hondo Ohnaka was the leader of the Ohnaka Gang. Ohnaka and most of the members, including Turk Falso[4] Gwarm,[6] and Jiro[18] were Weequay.[4] A Weequay pirate named Skragg took control of the remnants of the Ohnaka Gang during the Imperial Era.[20] Ohnaka would later assist a rebel group known as the Spectres with liberating the planet Lothal from the grip of the Galactic Empire.[24] Ohnaka would later open Ohnaka Transport Solutions on Batuu.[25]

Many Weequay worked for the Hutt Cartel, some of which included Pagetti Rook and Rintel Aren, who specifically worked for Jabba the Hutt. Both Aren and Rook would meet their demise during the Rescue of Han Solo at the Great Pit of Carkoon.[1]

Multiple force-sensitive Weequay joined the Jedi Order, including the Jedi Sora Bulq and Jedi Knight Que-Mars Redath-Gom.[13]

Behind the scenes[]

Weequays were created for Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[1] The Weequay species were named after the fictional Polynesian harpononer Queequeg from Herman Melville's book Moby-Dick,[26] but were originally named "Queequay" by the crew of Return of the Jedi.[27]
