Whip Hand was an old Lancer-class frigate originally commissioned by the Galactic Empire. By the time the Yuuzhan Vong launched their invasion, Whip Hand was under New Republic command. In 28 ABY, Whip Hand was deployed to protect the Republic-class cruiser Far Thunder while it underwent repairs. The two ships were attacked by approximately sixty coralskippers, and while Whip Hand was able to defend itself, it could not properly defend the larger craft.

The captain of the Thunder sent out a distress call, which brought Jaina Solo and Captain Ijix Harona to help. The two fighter squadrons and the Whip Hand managed to destroy the coralskippers, but they failed their mission—Far Thunder was scuttled and destroyed.
