Some category naming questions

I've been wanting to rename or move a few categories now for a while, but I think I should get a consensus here first.

  1. There should be a better category than Category: Domesticated animals for articles like Yoda's kybuck and Boga, who should also be counted as characters. Problem is, I can't think of a good name. Any advice?
  2. Category: Behind the Magic is a nice-sounding name, but unfortunately it's counterintuitive. Any ideas for renaming?
  3. Category: Races and species has a lot of subcategories like Category: Twi'leks. However, those categories are almost entirely character articles, so it seems a bit odd to me putting them there. Shouldn't they just be part of Category: Characters?

There's been some discussion on category talk pages, but they've gone inactive, so I'm asking here. — Silly Dan 02:47, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I suggest we get rid of "Behind the Magic" whatsoever. The current hierarchy is:
  • Real World
    • Behind the Magic
      • Filming locations
      • Interviews
      • Toy companies

Most of the articles in the "Behind the Magic" category are about companies, so the new hierarchy should be something like:

  • Real World
    • Filming locations
    • Interviews
    • Companies
      • Toy companies

Articles that aren't about companies will go into "Real World", which should in turn be renamed to "Real world" to comply with the naming conventions. - Sikon [Talk] 08:35, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Be weary that Category:Companies is for the in-universe companies, not the OOU ones. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:58, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Hmm, that's interesting. So category:Authors is for OOU authors and Category:Authors (In-Universe) is for IU authors, but for companies it's vice versa. What about Category:Companies (real)? - Sikon [Talk] 08:38, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Old Republic characters category

Is there a reason why people keep deleting this category from people who lived in the Old Republic? Kuralyov 05:28, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

  • The category is in the process of being removed, I think. QuentinGeorge 05:32, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Because the category is not meant for people who lived on a planet that was a member of the Galactic Republic or lived while the Republic existed. It should be used to identify those directly connected to it. --SparqMan 06:30, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
    • What exactly constitutes a "direct connection?" Kuralyov 16:43, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
      • Working for it is the easiest way to judge. --SparqMan 18:07, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

New user profiles

Is there a template to use when making a user profile? Unsigned comment by Doo Doo (talk • contribs).

  • No, the user is entitled to make their user page with their own choice of style. However, there cannot be too many images on the page wasting space or sucking bandwidth. Otherwise you'll get an admin knocking on your talk page. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
    • What are the boxes in some users profiles that are like:
en This user is a native speaker of English,
fox This user contributes using Mozilla Firefox.

And especially, what is the "sw-3 This user has an advanced understanding of the Star Wars Galaxy.'? What does the number mean? How do I attain such a ranking? Doo Doo 21:06, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Check Wookieepedia:Template messages/User namespace/. There is no authority handing out rankings like sw-3, though. It's completely self-applied. — Silly Dan 21:22, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
    • I have a gallery on my user page of images I like (at the bottom). Does that constitute "too many images" or are you referring more to vanity images that are used only for user profiles?--DannyBoy7783 21:41, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

We're hoping to make the process of adding these sorts of boxes much easier. If you have any suggestions for user-profile related features this wiki needs, please let me know or place a bug request in our bug tracker. Wikia will be hiring a userbox developer to work on this next month. Angela (talk) 12:40, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Wookieepedia:Meetings

I'm just reading the transcripts from the first two Wookieepedia meetings and I would have liked to have been there to clear up some things. For example, Wikicities will never have pop-up ads! Seriously. Why would anyone stay if we did that? We're hosting free-content on open-source software, making it very easy for people to leave if we piss them off. It would be stupid for any company to risk that. :)

Also, on the question of buying ads - Wikia will pay for that. So far, all we've done was a short ad on Kuro5hin during "adopt a wiki" week, but we will have a budget for exactly this sort of thing later this month. We want to sort out our stats before we buy too many though since we want to track what sort of effect different ads have, which we can't do very well at the moment.

Have you considered using IRC for the meetings? The advantage is that a lot of other wiki channels are there and it doesn't require any special software. You can access it via the web at irc.wikicities.com if you don't have an IRC client, and you can keep the channel open between meetings for people to chat or ask questions. I can set up a gateway specifically for this wiki if you think it would be useful. See the Memory Alpha or Uncyclopedia ones for example. Until then, just choose "wookieepedia" from the drop down channel list on irc.wikicities.com.

I'd like to suggest a topic for the next meeting - are there any software changes that Wookieepedia needs? I don't mean standard bug fixes that everyone wants, but cool stuff for this wiki that you couldn't get outside Wikicities.

  • I'm not sure where else to put this, but I'd really like to be in on the redesign discussed at the last meeting. My brain will be mush for the next week or so (Can we say madatory overtime? I think we can!) but I'm all for it. I think we could outdo Memory Alpha designwise, but that may be the lack of sleep talking. And to make this on-topic, I am always pro-IRC. Dark Spork 04:09, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
  • I agree Angela. I hate popups. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:05, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Gallery coding

is there a way to center a gallery? --Razzy1319 04:30, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

You can put <center> tags around it. For example:
Angela (talk) 22:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
The <center> tag is deprecated by W3C. <div align="center"> should be used instead. - Sikon [Talk] 12:51, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. --Razzy1319 07:07, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Another question... is it possible to change the thumbnail size or is that only user preferential? and is it possible to link to a particular part of an article like say the part of Palpatine's article dealing with the Behind the scene? --Razzy1319 06:53, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Just add "###px" in the description, like this: [[Image:Example.jpg|An Example|200px|right]] per your other question, I believe you just make the link [[Nameofarticle#Nameofsection|Linkname]] CooperTFN 06:59, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
