The Yam'rii were an insectoid sentient species that had green skin, large, golden compound eyes, and a pair of mandibles, with a pair of prominent triple-jointed front limbs that were bent and held together at an angle. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, a skirt-wearing Yam'rii was a patron of Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley, a spaceport located on the planet Tatooine.
Behind the scenesEdit
A member of Yam'rii species first appeared in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The Yam'rii was later named as Kitik Keed'kak and her species identified in 1995 on a card in the Star Wars Legends Premiere Limited set in the Star Wars Customizable Card Game made by made by Decipher, Inc. Although the species' name has not yet been used in any canon source, Lucasfilm Story Group member Leland Chee confirmed on Twitter that all Legends species names should be assumed to be canon unless stated otherwise.
Referred to as the "Praying Mantis" during production, Stuart Freeborn designed the model that would become the Yam'rii in England during the production of A New Hope's cantina sequence, and the puppet used to portray it was constructed by the special effects team in London and filmed on set as part of principal photography. An uncredited Jack Purvis, the same actor who portrayed the chief Jawa in the film, hid beneath the alien's skirt and operated it via strings attached to its limbs. Despite being one of the most intricate and complex props created for the scene, the Yam'rii was difficult to spot in the final film.
