"We are approaching the planet Yavin. The Rebel base is on a moon on the far side. We are preparing to orbit the planet."
―An Imperial officer, to Imperial Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, via intercom[10]

Yavin Prime,[11] also known simply as Yavin,[10] was an orange gas giant, nearly 200,000 kilometers in diameter,[7] located in the Outer Rim Territories.[1] Its clouds provided cover in battle, but death awaited any pilot who dove too far.[12]

It was orbited by twenty-six moons,[4] three of which could sustain humanoid life,[7] including Yavin 4, Yavin 8, and Yavin 13.[5] One of those moons, Yavin 4, was once home to the ancient Massassi warriors[1] and was used by the Rebel Alliance.[10]

The primary hyperlane used to reach Yavin was the Hydian Way; its trace hyperlanes included the Pinooran Spur, the Junction-Tierell Loop, and the Yavin Bypass.[13]

Yavin Prime orbited by several of its moons

In the year 0 BBY,[14] the Millennium Falcon orbited the gas giant to reach Yavin 4, where the headquarters for the Alliance to Restore the Republic were located. Later, Yavin 4 was almost destroyed by the Death Star, a planet-killing battle station designed by the Galactic Empire.[10]

Four years after the destruction of Alderaan, Captain Wedge Antilles and Vanguard Squadron were sent on a mission to Yavin Prime, to steal the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Victorum, which was already in an engagement with Talus Group. The Star Destroyer was needed for the New Republic's secret Project Starhawk.[12]
