Zalem was a Dathomirian Zabrak[3] female who was native to the[1] Outer Rim Territories[4] planet Dathomir. She was the Clan Mother of the Nightsister coven of witches. Her successor was Mother Talzin, who took over after she was killed by Jedi Master Quinlan Vos,[1] by 50 BBY.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
In the new Star Wars canon, Zalem was mentioned in the Jedi Temple Archives set of Topps trading cards.[5] In Star Wars Legends, Zalem first appeared in the 23rd issue of the Star Wars: Republic comic series.[6]

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle! states that Asajj Ventress was born 50 years before Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, placing her birth in 50 BBY. Ventress is taken within her year of birth, meaning this also happened in 50 BBY. Star Wars: The Clone Wars — "Nightsisters" establishes that during these events, Talzin is the Mother of the Nightsisters, meaning that Zalem must have died by 50 BBY.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary establishes that Dathomirians are a subspecies of the Zabrak species and Nightsisters in the Databank (backup link) establishes that all Nightsisters are Dathomirians. As Zalem was a Nightsister, she must also be a Dathomirian Zabrak.

- ↑ Talzin was still the Mother of the Nightsisters by the time they were wiped out by Grievous. According to Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, the Battle of Dathomir took place in 20 BBY. Thus, Talzin was Mother up until 20 BBY.
